I've got my new hardware arriving today

Now I'm not sure wither to bother setting up Raid or not. These are my choices: -

1. Raid 0 using 2x 250GB. Will have to take regular backups.
2. Raid 1 using 2x 250GB. Shouldn't need as many backups as mirrored. Is speed affected? As data is written to two drives at once.
3. Raid 5 using 3x 1TB. This is prob my favourite choice, but I read that write speed can be affected.

Not sure to bother or just stick with a standard setup and take regular backups. Anyone here used raid?

Have no speed issues with raid 5 and mirrored raid, but that on my work servers, which r 15k sas drives, so not sure about 7200 or 5400 SATA drives...

How about bacing up what you need to a NAS? and having a raid setup on the nas?

I think I'm going to do is setup the system as with 2x 250GB as Raid 0. Then I've got a 1TB for important data. Once everything is running I'll setup every other day backup to my external USB3.0 drive.

@ Bob, yep eventually I think I'm gonna invest in a quality NAS.

I bought the netgear DUO with 2TB drive, at the time they were doing a free 2nd drive.
If i was buying again I would look for one that had wake on lan, will save a packet on the leccy.

I might go for a Raid 5 setup on it with 4 drives. Will get one next month.
