View Full Version : Transfer mkv from pc to vu duo internal harddrive
I can play mkv via network mount but is it possible to save mkv to hard drive in vu?
I can do that by just browsing the network from the PC. The Vu+ drive is shared and you can just copy it across. I think that's standard as I don't recall installing Samba.
another option is to ftp the files you want to the vu hard drive.
ftp from pc to vu takes ages,is there a quicker way?

In short no :D Out of interest how long is ages, shouldn't take that long, remember most mkv's are 6gb+ so takes time to transfer the file.
I did a 12gb mkv ans it took 36 hours,using filezilla,
I have also done it with DCC and is was no quicker
Takes me 10 minuets to transfer a 6gb file ,using ubntu and filezilla ,using windows and dcc is a lot slower.
just for info and out of curiosity, u know i can't try it myself yet ;)
can't u put the file on a flash memory, connect it to the box and then copy it to the hard disk?
thanks :)
On my pc i can access the vu plus by typing this in to the URL box
\\vuplus\media\hdd
This then opens a window directly in the hard drive. you can then drag and drop file directly on to your VU. i then create this as a shortcut on my desktop.
Not sure if this is exclusive to XP Pro edition, but "My Network Places" lists the VU+ Duo HDD and can be treated like any other Windows explorer window. Transfers are as fast as my gigabit LAN will allow. I also use it to transfer recordings to my PC, edit out commercials etc, and transfer them back to custom folders on the VU+ drive
I found my Vu in network places too in windows 7. Then when I looked last night it wasn't there, odd.

Less then 1 min through a network? I doubt it :)
yea 5GB in under a minute is not possible on a 100Mb/s interface - fastest transfer you could achieve would be 12MB/s but more likely would be 8/9 MB/s if you are lucky
Via ftp i can hit 16-19 on a good day lol

Then there is something wrong with your speed reporting :
8 bits = 1 byte so 100/8 = 12.5 :p
Im not too sure ive neva really paid too much attention to internal speeds lol

But isnt it possible to just have the movie file on a usb stick and then stick it in the VU and somehow save it to the hard drive that way, no ?
Am I missing something here again, lol ?

It's just a bit of a pain to have to go insert flash drive in pc, copy file to flash, remove flash, insert flash in duo, copy file to duo HDD.
It's a lot better if we can simply copy and paste/transfer straight from PC to duo.
Just to make it a hat-trick, I can confirm that gab2001uks trick regarding network discovery also works for me in Windows Vista.
easiest way is to install Samba server on the VU Duo from networks. Once this is installed you can access your hard drive by opening windows explorer and typing \\vuduo\hdd or \\vuduo\media\hdd. one or the other I cant remember. Never bothered with any FTP software always copied with windows explorer.
god knows how i ended up resurrecting an old thread. I cant edit my post the actual path to the movie folder is \\VUDUO\Harddisk\movie
