View Full Version : OpenVIX bug causing crashes

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong section.

I’m running VIX on a VU+ UNO 4K SE and have been really happy with it. I’m running 5.3.034.

I have ordered my favourite bouquet channels 1,2,3,4 etc. and have all my kit controlled by a Harmony remote. I finally got round to programming my favourite channels on the Harmony (basically it presents a screen of channel icons which you press and it simply sends the channel number).

To speed the channel change up I have always programmed three digit channel numbers e.g. channels 1, 10 and 48 are sent as 001, 010 and 048. VIX nearly always crashes if you precede a channel number with zero(s).

Can anyone else confirm same? Can this be logged as a fixable bug please?

Many thanks,

HB

Hi,
you better program the Harmony to send without leading 0 but with a following OK/RETURN. This is the way I use it for years now. It does not mean that you did not found a bug but a way to better use the Harmony.

Thanks Ralf.

I had already removed the zeros on the Harmony commands for now to stop the crashing but will look for the option to add OK at the end as you suggest to speed up the channel change.

I still think it’s a VIX bug though - pressing zero on the remote should not cause it to crash.

I’ve searched but cannot find a crash log. Where do I find it?

Thanks,

If its a crash then you will the log displayed on the TV and the receiver will reboot ... the crash log will also be stored in /root/logs - no need to turn on debug.
However, if not there are you really seeing a crash??

HeadBanger

It certainly reports that it needs to restart. I pressed zero, zero, one and took a picture as it crashes/restarted but it does not look like I have permission to add it.

FTP to the receiver, /home/root/logs
Save crash log to PC,
If you have IPTV, edit it and remove user details
Attach it here (no need to zip).

Guide to attachments on link below. Ignore what is not relevant to you, (we don't need screenshots)

Sorry I managed to post the wrong one.
This is the correct file.

Is it this?:

Does it crash if you disable time shifting?

ccs
10-06-20, 14:31
I can't make it crash, with or without timeshift, with or without panic button, with or without epg mods phase 2.

EDIT: Haven't tried "Channel selection, make number of digits configurable (#526)"

Must admit I cannot tie up the crash with the 5.3.034 code

BrianTheTechieSnail
10-06-20, 17:25
Isn't a zero special - either the "panic button" (instant go to first channel) or instant return to previous channel in OpenVIX?

HeadBanger
10-06-20, 18:24
It makes no difference if I switch time shift off and it still crashes when pressing zero, zero, number (not always first time).

@HeadBanger:

What if you just press zero yourself?
Does that crash it?

HeadBanger

Yes, pressing zero, zero nearly always causes VIX to crash.

Am I the only one experiencing this - no one else can replicate it?

You are on 5.3.034 - how did you get to this release? Software update or fresh flash?
Also have you tried any of the epg mods that have been posted?

HeadBanger
13-06-20, 13:40
Via the VIX GUI as an update.

What EPG mods are you referring to? Can’t see anything on this thread (sorry if I missed it).

HB

ccs
13-06-20, 13:45
... if you're not aware that epg mods are being tested, then it's very unlikely you're using them.

The mods require a number of files to be transferred to different locations on your box before becoming active.

If you have ever been asked to copy over a .py to the receiver and it hasn't been deleted it would explain the issue, as I couldn't relate the crash to current code.
Would be better for you to backup your settings and reflash with ImageManager ... then see what happens

abu baniaz
13-06-20, 14:08
Nobody is able to reproduce your issue, that doesn't mean there isn't a problem. I suggest you flash 5.3 034 again and restore settings and plugins as the first step. You can flash using Image Manager which will create a settings backup for you. I fyou prefer to flash by USB, make a settings backup first.

If you still have this problem then can I ask what have you got for "Enable Panic Button" on this settings page:
Menu / Setup / User interface / Channel Selection

Maybe try toggling it off and on (or on and off) saving each time.

@abu: Does that make any sense? Correct me if it doesn't.

No crash for me on solo2 pressing 0 on my remote (do it a lot actually). Tried with and without panic button being enabled.

Maybe something to do with how bouquets setup? Did u say you had them setup different from default? Are these bouquets ABM generated?

HeadBanger
15-06-20, 07:54
Setting panic button to off makes no difference.
It’s when pressing zero more than once that seems to trigger it.

I use Cross EPG, have created favourites and then selected alternative numbering mode (my setup > channel selection > Alternative so channels are re-numbered 1,2,3....etc).

I’ve changed how the remote sends channel commands now so unless zeroes are pressed in error, I am avoiding the crashes.

My harmony remote only has favourites for the "watch tv" activity, no others, so I wasn't able to try what you're doing.

Have you set up your Uno4K to be a "watch tv" activity, as I can't see any other way of doing it?

Does the Vu remote cause the same crash?

Yes, I have set my VU to be my main watch activity (as a Freesat service provider) so that I can have the Harmony display favourite channels as you describe.
Yes, original remote does the same.

When I tried it on my solo2, it was with ABM generated bouquets with nothing much change to defaults

I can't make it crash, whatever I try.

One thing I don't understand is when I disable the panic button, zero immediately takes me back to the previous channel. Is this to be expected?

Its crashing because in these lines:
if config.usage.multibouquet.value:
bqrootstr = '1:7:1:0:0:0:0:0:0:0:FROM BOUQUET "bouquets.tv" ORDER BY bouquet'
else:
bqrootstr = '%s FROM BOUQUET "userbouquet.favourites.tv" ORDER BY bouquet'% self.service_types
self.service_types is not defined and its going to there because config.usage.multibouquet is not set

Afraid that last time I looked at the code the last part of the line was missing on my Ipad and I didn‘t see the issue

Simon needs to look at this.

Breaks for me here with the instructions you posted below. Looks to be copy and pasted code from somewhere else and has probably never worked. It's a section of code I am not familiar with. With what I committed the crash was gone. ATV have something very similar but when I tried it I just got trapped with the backdrop screen and a greyed out infobar.

So can we figure out what is the correct behaviour/logic for those config settings? Personally I have always had multi-bouquets enabled.

simonc
17-06-20, 09:21
At the risk of complicating the discussion, what is the point of single bouquet mode? Which actual bouquet is single bouquet mode meant to use? And why does the UI, when in this mode, still display things like the bouquet lists when opening EPGs, the favourites button in the channel list? If I only wanted a single bouquet, I'd just delete ones I don't want. Or is it intended as a temporary switch that you might activate when you've got visitors and you don't want them confused?

This is probably the commit which set up multi-bouquets, 14 years ago!

If you leave the current bouquet (e.g. press UP or DOWN on the 4 way button and then go into the ALL or Satellite list and then zap to a channel) it is then impossible to return to any bouquet.

From viewing a channel, press UP/DOWN, then BLUE for favourites/bouquets, the bouquet list is empty.

If you are in a bouquet and you select GEPG and then the TV button it just displays current bouquet.

I can't find any way to re-enter any bouquet once I have left the active bouquet. Hmm, I think said that already.

TBH, I think InfoBarGenerics.py and ChannelSelection.py need a complete rewrite. In the context of the way current image works this code seems like complete junk that serves no useful purpose, and that can only lead to threads on the forum such as this one.

My personal opinion is until this is code is re-written/removed, config.usage.multibouquet should be removed from setup.xml and config.usage.multibouquet forced to "yes" in UsageConfig.py.

What do you think.

Yes. I'd suggest removing single bouquet mode. I only ever use a single custom bouquet - there's not really enough channels on UK terrestrial to warrant multiple bouquets - and I've never used this option. If you only want a single bouquet, you can choose to not create more than one!

If you want the whole lot gone, I'm happy to get the hatchet out.

EDIT: It's referred to by many plugins, AutoTimer and EPGSearch included

EDIT: It's referred to by many plugins, AutoTimer and EPGSearch includedThat doesn't stop us from removing it in enigma if we want to do that. It just means we need to retain the variable (in UsageConfig.py).

Maybe we should start a thread in the Dev area to discuss further or find if anyone else has useful input or knowledge of what this is supposed to do. Otherwise I am just going to disable it for the time being.

Alternative numbering is for making all bouquets start at 1
Disabling multi bouquets implies, (or at least should) ensure you only have one bouquet. This should mean alternative numbering is not applicable.

However, I don't see how disabling multi-bouquets can work properly. What should happen to the last scanned bouquet after you perform a scan?

I think it is old code, not used by anyone for years and completely out of step with how a modern image works. And like Simon says if you only have one bouquet (or none) enigma still works fine with multi bouquets enabled.

It appears that before bouquets there was a concept of a single list of favourites.

Probably. Scan and then add to favourites. One of my first posts here involved enabling multiple bouquets in Dreambox edit. The TM800HD had a sharp SOC and not had a box with picture quality like it since. Either that or my eyesight is not what it was.

So the Sharp was sharp?

That's three of us agreeing.

Simon got his hatchet out has a feature branch with it removed if you want to pick into your tree. He is Terrestrial only so less likely to encounter issues with its removal.

Yes, 2 commits, one to remove it from setup but keep the rest of the code. The other culls the single feature. Both are completely untested.

Well if someone tests this I see no reason not to cherry pick it.

Just to confirm that this appears to have been fixed in version 5.4.001.

Many thanks.
