No should not have to as it takes it from the master box to your slave box channels and epg.

I sometimes switch client box on and epg is not fully populated so I load epg from there rather than going to sever

Is your client box in daily use as mine is or once in a week?

Shouldn’t be. Are you using an HD tv with HDMI lead on your client box? Which receiver you got as your client box?

Yes it is a 4k TV with hdmi 2.0 lead and the box is a zgemma H9 twin.

The menus look grainy and FHD channels looks like 570p

I’d check all your cabling as sounds like a dodgy connection somewhere. What settings have you used on your Client box? Double check that you have selected HDMI, 1080i, Multi Refresh Rate etc. Something is a miss with your setup somewhere.

Is the hdmi 2.0 ok for a 4k box and tv i wonder?

In this case, the most important thing is to have a current system update.
