View Full Version : Coming from Sky Q + Sky Q mini

I'm in the UK and I currently have Sky Q along with two Sky Q Mini boxes but am going to cancel due to the very high monthly costs. I have owned a VU+ duo2 in the past (since sold) so am thinking of getting a VU+ Duo 4K this time with a pair of Zgemma i55plus units too. If my maths is right I will have pay back in about 7-8 months!

The plan is for a new LNB and to watch FreeSat. Obviously I'm aware of the change of channel choice that I will have coming from Sky Q and am OK with that aspect of the plan. I might also get a DBV-T2 tuner to have that option too. As I understand it, with the correct LNB I will have 8 concurrent view/recording options from the satellite feed.

I am interested to know whether anyone else has made a similar leap to me. I'm particularly interested in the day-to-day usability of my proposed new system compared to Sky and especially the experience from the Zgemma boxes. Whilst Sky Q is far from perfect (and not very customisable) it is quite slick in its operation.

The sort of things I'm thinking of are as follows:

Consistency of experience between the boxes
EPG information / number of days
Series link capability
Sound (not sure if Freeview has any Dolby / surround sound for example)
Playability of recordings on remote devices (e.g. iPad or PC)

Lastly I assume the Duo 4K is the sensible choice compared to the Ultimo for my needs.

Thanks in advance

I assume you are you planning on Unicable LNB?
If so I would suggest at this moment in time the Giga UE 4K instead of the Vu+ Duo 4K - unless a few issues are resolved on the Duo 4K.

Of the 1st 4 bullets, they are all handled including AC3 where its available on Freesat, the 5th needs feedback from others.

Yes re. Unicable LNB

Thanks for your thoughts.

...unless a few issues are resolved on the Duo 4K...Re. this, what issues.

There is an issue with the next OE-A version which I guess will be fixed, but would suggest you also look at other receivers - Vu+ is not the only brand around anymore.

Being a newbie could you elaborate on the meaning of this please

I should have been clearer!
Many of the E2 images (eg OpenViX, OpenATV .....) are based around the same core components and utilities(built from the OE-Alliance see github.com/oe-alliance ), the image differences being in the Enigma component e.g https://github.com/OpenViX/enigma2.
At any time there are version of both the images and the OE-A, currently OpenViX build from OE-A 4.3, but the next OE-A 4.4 with updated components is proving an issue with the Duo 4K (only). As I said I am sure it will be resolved, but didn‘t want you buying a new box and immediately having some potential issues.

Also although some people think of Vu+ traditionally as the main brand, there are a lot of really good receivers now out there at very good competitive prices.

Hi

Have you looked at seeing what sky will offer you to remain a customer you can easy get 50% off your subscription what with prime Netflix britbox and others in the market
they have competition for your bucks, only last week I told virgin I would be leaving paying £70.00 for broadband and phone a month, would have settled for £62 but the retention
guy knocked it down to £57 on a 12 month contract, I have also had a 50% reduction by sky in the past and the cut price deal was on a 18 month contract.
Ok with sky you might have to play hardball and say your leaving and in some cases allow the end date to happen but the offers of cheaper rates will start appearing through
your email and post before you know it.
