View Full Version : Bigger Dish, Worse Signal Quality

A few days ago I asked an engineer to replace my existing Zone 1 dish with a Zone 2 dish. Unfortunately this has now led to a dramatic decrease in signal quality, whereas previously my assumption was that it will either improve slightly or stay about the same. Is there any possible reason for this?

For comparison my Zone 1 dish would show SNR at approximately 82%, whereas my new Zone 2 dish is showing SNR at approximately 64%. These readings are about an hour apart where weather conditions don't seem to have changed using the same hardware.

My biggest concern is that this will now lead to a broken or distorted picture on a regular basis when it rains whereas previously I only use to get this when there was heavy rain and lightning

Get the engineer back. Probably incorrect setup of dish.

..... or the signal is so good that you are flooding the receiver and you may have to insert attenuators into the cables to retard the signal (but only if you have issues receiving all the channels) - you don't mention the receiver or your location.

I'm getting all the channels.

I'm using an Xtrend ET8500 and am based in NW London.

Don’t worry too much about the signal readings, the receiver could be giving incorrect readings.
If you are getting all the channels and picture quality is good, then don’t worry too much about it.
Zone 1 was suffice for what you needed in your area.

If you want reassurances, get the installer guy out again and get him to double the dish and LNB and cabling for you. [emoji4]

Well its a clear day and I've got picture distortion on Sky One HD and a few of the less known channels. My suspicions have been confirmed.

Sounds like a crap install by a crap installer.

You may check how well the dish is aimed by doing a simple test.
Slightly push then slightly pull the dish at the top, bottom, and both sides while watching the SNR. The SNR should drop in value every time the dish is pushed or pulled on in any direction. If the SNR goes up or increases during this test, then the dish needs adjustment.
