Hi

Decided to update my Xtrend ET8000 from 3.2.027 to the new 5.1.004

Left my machine with a usb in it for approx 5 mins and it said booting .....

I thought it had hung and turned it off, and on, and just got the splash screen, rebooted with the usb in again, and again waited and again it stayed on booting...

Turned it off and on again and now all the screen says is ET8000 and it appears not to recognise the usb stick.

I can still ssh to the box, and have recovered some backups and tried to put them on the usb stick and reboot (both 3.2.027 and the 5.1.004, both with force) and nothing.

Is there a recovery procedure I could try?

Naturally any help appreciated

Andrew

It looks like you are still on 3.2 image. Can you find another USB stick?

Ta Abu
Tried a number of sticks and the box is showing no signs of doing anything when turned on with them in.

Save any important files. Then try following:

init 4
rm -f /etc/enigma2/settings
init 3

Make sure all other USB devices are plugged out and only a single USB stick is plugged in. I thought I had bricked my E2 receiver in the past only to realise another USB devices was causing the boot process to ignore my USB stick

Thanks for the input, the init commands did nothing, and I've no other usb devices connected - it's looking very 'paperweighty' atm

Any way for me to place the images I have somewhere on the hdd and boot that ie some sort of command line restoration process?

Off to buy a couple of new sticks on the off-chance, but may be trying looking for a bargain in the sales.

Yes thanks - I read all that documentation to refresh my memory from the last time I upgraded before last night's adventure.

I can scp all the recordings off the box and at least that'll go some way to pacify swmbo

Try a low level format using HDDGURU and then format fat32 and see if that works,If not gat a genuine sandisk 8GB from argos and should do the job

I would be surprised if you have "bricked" the receiver, I am pretty hard when testing and have never managed to do it (even on an ET8000)
So I would try again, even with an old stick tucked away in a drawer - you don't need much space really for the image.
Also just reread the flash guide http://www.openvix.co.uk/index.php/guides-and-tutorials/receiver-usb-flashing-guides/xtrend-usb-flashing-guides/

Note that if the receiver cannot read the usb and see an image , you will not get a prompt message on the receiver display to press the OK button (on the receiver)

Lastly. learn how to use the ViX ImageManager to couch flash the image directly without need of a usb stick.

Thanks to all that have helped me. I'm please to say that 'happy bunny status' has been achieved.

I ended up doing a full slow format on the original 8Gb Sandisk I was using (after trying 7 other sticks/adaptors) on windows 7 using the disk admin tools - and then putting the original 3.2.027 image back on with 'force'.

So I'm back where I started last night, but boy am I happy about that.

I'll look at the ImageManager as suggested but will be leaving well alone for a while I think.

Thanks again

Andrew

Remember that whether you flash via usb or preferably ImageManager, your image is so old, that you will have to setup from new - cannot copy backup settings.

OK, thanks for the warning.

Try the Backup and Restore Guide (http://www.world-of-satellite.com/showthread.php?47588-Image-backup-and-flashing-Settings-backup-and-restores)

Take one hell of a lot to brick an et8000 as twol said

Which I'm very pleased about :)

Have already read up on the guides (for my next attempt), but I think I'll be waiting 'til after Christmas.... just in case :)

Just another little warning, obviously lots of internal changes in the image, but also quite a few menu/setup changes ..... so make sure you have no pressure to finish!

Thanks for the warning. I'm on Christmas holiday, so that's why I rolled my sleeves up the other night as I knew it would be a chunk of learning and tweaking...I've a couple of years worth of upgrades to catch up on.
