View Full Version : What's the current position with Kodi?

Hi,

I've been going around in circles looking at numerous posts here & there with comments about Kodi on official VU+ boxes. We're considering replacing our GigaBlue Quad 800 with a VU+ Duo 2 - predominantly to get a decent media-player client on it, such as Kodi.

1) s there such a thing as "official Kodi support" by VU+ themselves?
2) Would that mean moving away from openVix to a factory image of the OS?
3) If Kodi does exist for Enigma 2 / the Vu+ boxes is it in a similar form to my desktop Mac or age-old Android TV box, with a decent UI and menu system, or is it something quite different? I tried Kodi Direct on the GigaBlue.... hmm....

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Steve

My advice is keep e2 & Kodi separate.

That's a fair comment.

I've no great reason to run Kodi except regular frustration with media playback using the Gigablue / Vix. For example 7 out of 10 times external subs don't play - yet I've triple checked the box settings, and why should exactly the same .srt files & settings play some of the time yet all of the time with Plex and Kodi?

Also we only ever get audio (not video) when playing h265 content - this is probably a hardware limitation of the Gigablue box.

And even with h264 encoded files I'm pretty sure using the Plex client on our TV results in better video quality than playing the same content through the Gigablue. Again, probably a hardware limitation?

Can anyone confirm whether the VU+ Duo 2 can handle h265 files ok?

Thanks,

Steve

The Duo2 doesn't play H265 files. It is a hardware limitation. You would need to look at the new generation 4K receivers for H265 playback. My Ultimo 4K plays H265 files and if I'm corrected also, the non 4K receiver OS Mega (Edison) can too. I use my Venz V10 Pro running LibreELEC for my Kodi, a far better experience imo.

Specs say Duo 2 only h264. You need to check some of the newer boxes - the Arm boxes all do h265, don't know if any of teh Mips boxes do this.
Having said all that, have had media players for years and playing sub title files files was often an issue and often required some software mixing to get them to work on some dedicated players
Agree generally with Andy that a dedicated media player box is often all round better, but my HD51 receiver is pretty fast where Kodi is concerned (playing videos etc ... not streaming.

Thanks. Absolutely, I agree with you both - dedicated box (even one of the £60 Android STBs) for Kodi = usually a better media playback experience. But it's one more box, one more remote, one more set of questions from the family about where things are. :-)

Hi,
do not mix Kodi and Kodi Direct. The last one is something like an emulator for Kodi Addons whereas the first one a real Kodi is which works quite decent only PVR section is (was?) missing.
