Vu+ and Hard discs

Hi. I am updating an old motorised sytem and the Vu+ duo is on my short list....I have no experience with such machines and was wondering as a complete newbie what the problems are in fitting an internal HD probably probably 500 GB region. Also or alternatively would it be easier for a newbie to use and set up a USB external Hard drive........Thank's

P.S. Can both internal and external drives be connected at the same time
