A friend has bought a 2nd hand enigma2 box and when he tried to access it via telnet he's prompted for a password. He's tried all the obvious ones ie leaving it blank, password, root and dreambox but none of them are working. Is there a way to find the password? Would flashing the box remove the telnet password? This would be a last resort

I think he'll maybe be stuck with this. A clean flash will get it back to default. See if someone else can offer any advice.

Cheers Andy.

I haven't a clue how passwords work but I'm guessing it'll be stored on the box somewhere. Would it possible to access the file by using the dreamexplorer plugin and either delete or modify the file?

This was taken from another site

Download Dream-Explorer from plugin feeds most images should have it in there feeds

This will allow you to browse to etc folder and as long as you have 2 file types passwd & passwd-
scroll down to passwd and Delete it
next Rename passwd- to passwd and save

Re start your box & you should be good to go as i have recovered many boxes with unknown root passwords with this procedure ( not my comments )

I cant test it for you as im copying some movies from the HDD on my box at the mo
But worth a try
No guarantees though

If you want to wait about an hour I can test it for you

What happens if a receiver doesn't have any active plugin feeds cos they are on an older image?

Your method of deleting the passwd file and renaming passwd-

RESETTING ROOT PASSWORD

Password file is located here:

/etc/passwd

If you open the passwd file with notepad++ you have to edit the line that begins 'root'
You can also edit this on the receiver using DreamExplorer.

It should looks something like this:

root:x:0:0:root:/home/root:/bin/sh

Delete the "x" after "root:". It's important to leave the colons.
Save and reboot the box and the password will be reset (blank, null, nothing, no password)

root:x:0:0:root:/home/root:/bin/sh
