Clonezilla Live is a Debian-based live CD containing Clonezilla, a partition and disk cloning software similar to Norton Ghost. It saves and restores only used blocks in hard drive. With Clonezilla, one can clone a 5 GB system to 40 clients in about 10 minutes.

-----------------------

What is Clonezilla?
You're probably familiar with the popular proprietary commercial package Norton Ghost®. The problem with these kind of software packages is that it takes a lot of time to massively clone systems to many computers. You've probably also heard of Symantec's solution to this problem, Symantec Ghost Corporate Edition® with multicasting. Well, now there is an OpenSource clone system (OCS) solution called Clonezilla with unicasting and multicasting!
Clonezilla, based on DRBL, Partclone and udpcast, allows you to do bare metal backup and recovery. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (server edition). Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla SE is for massive deployment, it can clone many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously. Clonezilla saves and restores only used blocks in the harddisk. This increases the clone efficiency. At the NCHC's Classroom C, Clonezilla SE was used to clone 41 computers simultaneously. It took only about 10 minutes to clone a 5.6 GBytes system image to all 41 computers via multicasting!
Features:

Free (GPL) Software.
Filesystem supported: (1) ext2, ext3, ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, xfs, jfs of GNU/Linux, (2) FAT, NTFS of MS Windows, (3) HFS+ of Mac OS, (4) UFS of FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD, and (5) VMFS of VMWare ESX. Therefore you can clone GNU/Linux, MS windows, Intel-based Mac OS, and FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD, no matter it's 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x86-64) OS. For these file systems, only used blocks in partition are saved and restored. For unsupported file system, sector-to-sector copy is done by dd in Clonezilla.
LVM2 (LVM version 1 is not) under GNU/Linux is supported.
Grub (version 1 and version 2) is supported.
Unattended mode is supported. Almost all steps can be done via commands and options. You can also use a lot of boot parameters to customize your own imaging and cloning.
Multicast is supported in Clonezilla SE, which is suitable for massively clone. You can also remotely use it to save or restore a bunch of computers if PXE and Wake-on-LAN are supported in your clients.
Based on Partclone (default), Partimage (optional), ntfsclone (optional), or dd to image or clone a partition. However, Clonezilla, containing some other programs, can save and restore not only partitions, but also a whole disk.
By using another free software drbl-winroll, which is also developed by us, the hostname, group, and SID of cloned MS windows machine can be automatically changed.

Limitations:

The destination partition must be equal or larger than the source one.
Differential/incremental backup is not implemented yet.
Online imaging/cloning is not implemented yet. The partition to be imaged or cloned has to be unmounted.
Software RAID/fake RAID is not supported by default. It's can be done manually only.
Due to the image format limitation, the image can not be explored or mounted. You can _NOT_ recovery single file from the image. However, you still have workaround to make it, read this.
Recovery Clonezilla live with multiple CDs or DVDs is not implemented yet. Now all the files have to be in one CD or DVD if you choose to create the recovery iso file.

License:

Clonezilla itself is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL) Version 2. However, to run Clonezilla, a lot of free and open source software, e.g. the Linux kernel, a mininal GNU/Linux OS, are required.

This release of Clonezilla live (1.2.9-19) includes major enhancements,
changes and bug fixes.

ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES:

* The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release
is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2011/Jul/22).
* Linux kernel was updated to 2.6.39-3.
* Partclone was updated to 0.2.24.
* Pbzip2 was updated to 1.1.4.
* Brazilian Portuguese language was added. Thanks to Marcos Pereira da
Silva Cruz .
* The samba file system with hidden share now can be assigned in boot
parameter "ocs_prerun". Thanks to nottaken37. (Ref:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/clonezilla/forums/forum/663168/topic/4589215)
* Xz compression instead of gzip method was used when making squashfs,
therefore the Clonezilla live iso or zip file is smaller by ~ 31 MB.
* Program prep-ocsroot was improved to make mounting sshfs with an
account name including white space.
* Remove the option "-b1024" for pbzip2 since the unit is 100K, -b1024
will use 1024*100K per thread, and this might cause system to crash due
to out of memory for multiple cores. Without the option -b, the default
value will be used. Thanks to Telligent for the bug report
(
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=671650&aid=3324096&group_id=115473).
* //NOTE// From Clonezilla live 1.2.6-24, if you manage the boot

Clonezilla Live 1.2.10-14

[Clonezilla-release] Stable Clonezilla live (1.2.10-14) Released
From: Steven Shiau <steven@nc...> - 2011-09-27 15:03

This release of Clonezilla live (1.2.10-14) includes major enhancements
and major bug fixes.
ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES:
* The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release
is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2011/Sep/22).
* Linux kernel was updated to version 3.0.0-3.
* Partclone was updated to version 0.2.29.
* Gdisk was updated to version 0.8.0, and compiled without Unicode
support. Therefore libicu44 is no longer included. This makes the
Clonezilla live ISO file smaller by about 6 MB.
* Package partclone-utils was added.
* iPXE was updated to the date 20110910 from iPXE Git repository.
* German language files were added. Thanks to Michael Vinzenz.
* By default when a GNU/Linux system is restored, the udev hardware
records (70-persistent-cd.rules and 70-persistent-net.rules under
/etc/udev/rules.d/) in the restored OS will be removed. This can be
disabled in the expert mode with the option "-irhr".
* Source tarball for all the packages in Clonezilla live was added. It
can be found in the release repository, under the directory "source".
* A new live boot parameter was added: nicif. This parameter is used to
assign the network card's MAC address so that when it is booted via PXE,
the correct network card can be assigned specifically. This is for a
machine with 2 or more network cards. Example for this boot parameter:
nicif=aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff.
* //NOTE// From Clonezilla live 1.2.6-24, if you manage the boot
parameters by yourself, you have to put the extra boot parameter
"config" or "live-config" to make live-config to work.
* //NOTE// From Clonezilla live 1.2.6-24, due to the change in
Live-boot, the boot parameter to assign static IP address has been
changed. The new format is:
ip=**[DEVICE]:[CLIENT_IP]:[NETMASK]:[GATEWAY_IP]:[NAMESERVER]
[,[DEVICE]:[CLIENT_IP]:[NETMASK]:[GATEWAY_IP]:[NAMESERVER]]***::
e.g.
ip=eth0:192.168.100.1:255.255.255.0:192.168.100.25 4:8.8.8.8,eth1:192.168.101.1:255.255.255.0::

BUG FIXES
* Sgdisk failed to reload a GPT table if no initial GPT table on a new disk.
* Boot parameter parsing has been improved to accept grub2 1.99's
mechanism. It now works for three cases in /proc/cmdline (e.g., (1)
ocs_prerun="sleep 5" (2) ocs_prerun=\"sleep 5\" and (3)
"ocs_prerun=sleep 5").

From: Steven Shiau <steven@nc...> - 2011-11-28 23:26

This release of Clonezilla live (1.2.11-23) includes major enhancements
and major bug fixes.
ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES

The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release
is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2011/Nov/28).
Linux kernel was updated to version 3.1.1-1.
Partclone was updated to version 0.2.38.
Gdisk was updated to 0.8.1.
A new mode "1-2-mdisks" (one image to be restored to multiple disks)
was added in Clonezilla main menu. This is useful for creating massive
USB flash drives. Check this:
http://drbl.sourceforge.net/screenshot/?in_path=/12_Alvin_Su_Taiwan
This release supports VMFS5 imaging and cloning.
An option "-pa|--postaction" was added to ocs-onthefly; it can be
assigned to reboot or shut down the machine after cloning. Thanks to
flyfoxuk for this idea.
The option to fsck the source partition will be shown in beginner mode.
The grub2 for EFI booting was improved. Now it is able to boot a Mac
machine from a USB flash drive with the MBR partition table.
The package cpufrequtils was added.
The volume name of DOS and NTFS partitions on destination disk will
be shown before restoring.
Restore related menu, i.e. restoredisk or restoreparts, will only be
shown when images exist in image repository.
//NOTE// From Clonezilla live 1.2.6-24, if you manage the boot
parameters by yourself, you have to put the extra boot parameter
"config" or "live-config" to make live-config to work.
//NOTE// From Clonezilla live 1.2.6-24, due to the change in
Live-boot, the boot parameter to assign static IP address has been
changed. The new format is:
ip=**[DEVICE]:[CLIENT_IP]:[NETMASK]:[GATEWAY_IP]:[NAMESERVER]
[,[DEVICE]:[CLIENT_IP]:[NETMASK]:[GATEWAY_IP]:[NAMESERVER]]***::
e.g.

ip=eth0:192.168.100.1:255.255.255.0:192.168.100.25 4:8.8.8.8,eth1:192.168.101.1:255.255.255.0::

BUG FIXES

A bug in the option "-k1" was fixed.
A bug where NFS 4 might have been automatically used after assigning
the NFS version 2/3 protocol when mounting an NFS image repository was
fixed.
If the "system reserved partition" of MS Windows 7 or Vista is found
when restoring with the option "-k1" enabled, this partition won't be
enlarged to prevent boot failures.
A bug about failing to clone NTFS partitions on the AMD64 version of
Clonezilla live was fixed.

Clonezilla Live 1.2.12-10

This release of Clonezilla live (1.2.12-10) includes major enhancements
and major bug fixes.

ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES
* The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release
is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2012/Jan/27).
* The Linux kernel was updated to 3.2.1-2.
* Partclone was updated to version 0.2.45.
* Syslinux was updated to 4.0.5.
* A better mechanism was implemented in ocs-update-syslinux. Only when
the files to be updated are found on the system "syslinux -i" will be run.
* A better mechanism was implemented to keep the MS Windows boot
reserved partition size when option "-k1" is chosen.
* A better mechanism to deal with UFS partition in a GPT table when
saving FreeBSD 9.0.
* An option to use "autoname" to create the image name was added. Thanks
to encephalophone (Mike) for the patch.
* An option (-icds, --ignore-chk-dsk-size-pt) to skip checking skip
checking destination disk size before creating the partition table on it
was added. Thanks to Sartoratti Lorenzo for reporting this issue.
* Option -z7|--lrzip-compress was added for Clonezilla to use lrzip to
compress image.
* VMFS3 and VMFS5 support are separated, no more mixed because
partclone.fstype from 0.2.45 now can tell them. Since vmfs5 support is
still buggy, disable it in drbl-ocs.conf.
* A mechanism was added to avoid saving an image for an unmatched GPT
and MBR partition table disk.
* //NOTE// From Clonezilla live 1.2.6-24, if you manage the boot
parameters by yourself, you have to put the extra boot parameter
"config" or "live-config" to make live-config to work.

BUG FIXES
* An issue about PXE booting on a machine with multiple network cards
has been fixed.
* An issue about the unknown slow execution after an image is restored
100% has been fixed.
* /live/ and /live/cow unmounting error or warning messages are
suppressed when rebooting or halting.
* Serial console did not have tty when live-getty and console boot
parameters are assigned. Thanks to Shuras for this bug report.
* A problem where failing to reinstall grub1 for the restored OS was fixed.
* A problem where grub2 failed to be restored along with Fedora 16 due
to a different grub2 boot directory, /boot/grub2/, was fixed. Thanks to
Robert Weir for reporting this issue.

indefinite hang.
* A prompt about skipping re-installing grub 1 in ocs-functions was
improved.
* For imaging/cloning partition mode, "-g auto" is no longer turned
on by default. While it's still on for the imaging/cloning disk mode.
* The progress bar for resize2fs was turned on when resizing the
ext file system to fit the partition size.
*** BUG FIXES ***
* Bugs where ocs-onthefly failed to use the "-k1" option and where
ocs-tux-postprocess did not search LV were fixed.
* A bug where there was no ocs-update-syslinux process in
ocs-onthefly was fixed.

[Clonezilla-release] Stable Clonezilla live (2.3.1-18) Released

This release of Clonezilla live (2.3.1-18) includes major
enhancements and bug fixes.

ENHANCEMENTS and CHANGES

* The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release
is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2014/Dec/08).
* Linux kernel was updated to 3.16.7-2.
* Package drbl was updated to 2.11.13-drbl1, and clonezilla was
updated to 3.12.7-drbl1.
* Syslinux was updated to 6.03.
* Language files de_DE, ca_ES, es_ES, fr_FR, it_IT, ja_JP.UTF-8, tr_TR
and sk_SK was updated. Thanks to Michael Vinzenz, Juan Ramón
Martínez, René Mérou, Jean-Francois Nifenecker, Gianfranco Gentili,
Akira YOSHIYAMA, Volkan GEZER and Ondrej Dzivy Balucha.
* A mechanism was added to check if i386 library (libc6-i386 or
glibc.i686) exists on x86-64 system when running makeboot.sh due to
syslinux included in Clonezilla live is 32-bit.
* Linux kernel i486 was replaced by i586 because now only i586 kernel
exists on Debian Sid repository.
* A better way to deal with --rsyncable option of gzip and pigz was
implemented.
(https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Open_discussion/thread/8d5f80a6/)
* Adding support for device name format like /dev/rd/c0d0 and
/dev/ida/c0d0 RAID cards.
(https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/e82e1c04/)
* Now Clonezilla could support PV on disk, not only on partition.
* Fake RAID/firmware RAID is now supported if its device naming style
is /dev/md.
* The partition from an image could be now restored to different name
device, e.g. sda1 could be restored to sdb5.

BUG FIXES

* Temporarily disabled vmfs3 and vmfs5 support due to an issue
(https://github.com/glandium/vmfs-tools/issues/12). Now dd is used
for vmfs. Now waiting for the updating of vmfs-tools.
* Options "-fsck-src-part" and ""-fsck-src-part-y" were duplicated in
ocs-onthefly expert mode.
* The input harddrive of ocs-install-grub might be more than one,
therefore ocs-install-grub should take that into consideration.
* Only device name /dev/mmcblk0p* worked. Those /dev/mmcblk[1-9]p*
were not supported.
