update openvix

A friend of mine has this receiver & i noticed openvix 3.2 is installed, is it better to update by usb or online? also what needs backed up on the usb pen so he does not loose anything

That image is so old now, he won't be able to use backup settings. It will need to be a fresh flash using a USB.

I find the best thing he can do is get his mobile and take pictures of all the important setup screen settings and he will have something to refer back to one he completes new flash

You can transfer bouquets from one image to another. Use Dreamset/Dreamboxedit/E-Chanernelizer
