View Full Version : rear usb wont recognise hdd, front will
hi :)
new to all this so be gentle
i got an edision os mini, installed latest openvix, now trying to set up timeshift via an external usb hdd, i formatted all drives to ext4 with the free program 'mini tools partition manager"
a cruzer 16gb thumb drive is recognized by the os mini in the rear and front usb ports
a new external usb3 portable 2.5" 80gb is only recognized in the front usb port, and is not recognized in the rear usb port
the os mini manual gives identical specs for front and rear usb ports, 500 mA max, web recommending 320gb or less for hdds, could i of got a faulty OS mini or is it the usb3 lead ? idk
Usb drives should really have their own power supplies - it looks like one usb socket manages to work, but the other one doesn't.
Edit: OS-mini only has 2 usb2 connections. Usb3 to Usb2 is usually backwards compatible.

It's strange that one port works and one doesn't. If the external drive follows the USB 3.0 standard it may require a 900mA power source therefore the STB won't supply enough juice. You may find if this is the case that the front port may be trying to power the drive intermittently.

idk its a strange one, if usb3 is backward compatible then its backward compatible. i guess its possible the rear port emits 500mA and the front more than 500mA, and my hdd requires some level inbetween to spin-up.
i set it up out the front port for the moment, its a bit fugly but working for now, ..i may change to a powered drive to the rear port at a later date.
if i do this, is it ok to keep the powered external drive on 24/7/365 even when the edision is in standby at night, or would that lower the lifespan of the hard drive?
Menu > Setup > System > Storage Devices > Harddisk setting, can be used to set your standby time.
Whether it works or not will be depend on your usb hd's ability to respond to the request to go into standby.

What's the make and model of the drive?

cant check the drive model now blackvenom , ...the front usb port is no longer working lol even after powering off machine from back
its looking like ill have to go the powered usb route, which is a pain as thats a 3.5 encloser that i swap 3 diff 500 gb drives in and out off intermittently. so now ill end up with a 80gb2.5 usb and 2 spare 3.5 drives with no encloser.

Or you could buy a powered USB hub instead. Would be worth a try.

The USB hubs don't sent enough power to supply a usb HDD.
I tried on a duo2 and it don't work for me.

There are plenty of powered USB hubs that supply enough power for an external USB.

for the mo ill set it up with the 500gb powered one i have in the house, might look into the usb hubs once i get it up and running and become familiar with the box and vix.

as an offshoot to the timeshift question, can you set up permanent timeshift like sky, so its always recording a rolling buffer of the last 1hr being viewed, so you can rewind tv without pausing it first ? and if so does this wear out the hdd enuff that ppl dont use it, and if it does wear it out, could you partition the 500gb drive into say 5 partitions and rotate the timeshift store location between each partition every few months ...or am i overthinking it all lol
update:
set up a powered usb2 1000 gb in the back usb port and its still working for time shift after putting the os mini into stand by for the night.
the drive is an old WD green drive, which afair is a quiet low rev (5400 rpm) eco drive and i think it spins down when not in use.
ty for the help guys :)
