I have an LG tv and soundbar and when i first connected them i did so via an optical cable between the two, set tv to external speaker and all was good.
My wife decided that 'we' should decorate the lounge - so tv et al was stripped down and when i was wiring it back up i decided to connect the soundbar to my Mutant HD51 and that worked without any further configuration.
So which is the correct/better way to do it ?

If you use the TV tuner or apps on the TV connect to the TV., so long as the TV can pass 5.1 from its hdmi input via its optical output, not all TVs do.

Does your soundbar tell what it is outputting, ie DD, DTS or LPCM.

If your Mutant is set to Downmix the audio and everything sounds good
Why worry, Just enjoy.

How is your mutant performing, I nearly got 1, But need a extra tuner ?

If his soundbar can process 5.1, why would he send it 2channel downmix?

Thanks for the replies. I have found an issue with running it through the Mutant. When i switch hdmi inputs to use my Amazon FTV i still get the sound from the STB.

because you are not routing sound from the tv you will only get sound from the box
