View Full Version : [ET10x00] [4.2.027] Xtrend. Problems with USB tuners

ccs
24-01-17, 11:38
Couch flash 4.2.026 to 4.2.027, restored settings, auto-rebooted, but now stuck on countryside view.

Probably 95% thru' the boot process, telnet ok.

Edit: trying usb flash with no settings restore.

That has created a working system, but a settings and plugins restore with an Ethernet connection hangs when rebooting.

I had similar issue with some earlier version (21 to 22 or something) with Vu Zero. Just powered it off from switch and then it worked and not stuck anymore. Been so ca 1 month already.

The couch flash only tried to restore settings, as there was no internet established at that time.

Could the kernel update on the ET10K be significant?

What happens if you fresh flash and setup 4.2.027?

ccs
24-01-17, 13:05
I'll try that this afternoon.

I've just tried a settings restore without wifi rtl8192cu enabled in the settings, or plugged in via usb, but no joy.

ccs
24-01-17, 13:10
I've just rebooted without a Sundtek usb tuner connected, and back up and running ok, so I'll remove it from 026, flash 027 with settings restore, and then try to install the tuner from scratch.

Could be sundtek tuner causing issue with new kernel thats in ET10K.

I've tried a few things, but the Sundtek control centre always says that the driver is already installed and up to date.

Is there any way of getting rid of the driver, short of doing a fresh install?

Not just the e10k. The et8000 has the same problem....

This doesn't look like a software issue.
There seems to be a hardware issue, possibly not enough power?

Which tuner is that?
If that is DVB-S/S2 be sure you have the AC Adapter plugged in.

usb 3-1.4: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd mediasrv rqt 64 rq 2 len 4 ret -71

-71 means the device has disconnected from the system.

possible reasons for disconnecting (which I might think of):
a) tuner requires too much power (eg. AC adapter not connected if you have a passive satellite system (no active multiswitch in between))
b) the tuner is connected to a passive USB hub, both overload the usb port (=the port cannot deliver enough power)
c) hardware issue of the settopbox or USB stick
d) misconfigured USB kernel settings (this might affect all USB devices)
e) maybe some misconfigured standby behaviour in the kernel (this issue has been reported in our forum, after disabling USB standby (which has nothing to do with our driver) the device did not disconnect anymore) - this would clearly be a linux kernel bug but a workaround has been proposed (there's no workaround active for this on settopboxes at the moment).

You might join our chat http://chat.sundtek.de to have a closer look at it.

It's a "SUNDTEK USB TUNER CABLE TERRESTRIAL HD DVB-C/T/T2" and has been working fine for over a year until 4.2.027, and works when reverting back to 4.2.026.

....ccs, you do not have permission to access this pageSorry - forgot about that.
The et8000 also went to kernel 4.8.3 at 4.2.027 and it too gives an unaligned access error for a DVB vtuner.
In my case it's a USB one (so I can remove it - I have 3 others - and all is then OK).

I think there's a kernel USB suspend bug, but I need remote access to the system in order to clarify that.

It is no bug in our driver for sure.

What exactly do you mean by "remote access to the system"? Are you wanting to connect to a box running this kernel?

ccs
26-01-17, 22:47
As I've mentioned in another thread, it looks like some usb wireless dongles may also be affected by the kernel change.

A simple example is a telnet session, where just pressing the enter key can often result in a 10 seconds or so delay before a new prompt is displayed.

I'll produce a debug log if anyone thinks it'll be useful, but I can't until later tomorrow.

I just made a fresh flash to my ET10000 with OpenATV 6.0 2017.01.27 having Kernel 4.8.3. As soon as I installed Sundtek with ssi.exe, the box jams.
If Sundtek wants to connect to my ET10000, I`m more than happy to help. Not the firs time, since Sundtek has visited my earlier Ultimo few years ago solving T2 problems. So Markus, please contact me if you want to connect to my ET10000.

Yes he will ask you for remote access to a pc on your system which is capable of telnet/ftp access to the box, here he will be able to run tests and maybe make code changes on the fly to see if he can alleviate the problem, he once re-wrote the driver whilst connected to one of my boxes.

Yes I had exactly the same with the Sundtek DVB-S2 tuner when I tried it on a HD51, the box becomes totally unstable and unusable.

I was hoping to be able to use it on the SF4008 when it arrives.

I think he asked you to have contact in message #17Actually, he asked if "someone with an ETXXXX could join our chat" in #17, and you kindly offered to help.

I'm more than willing to help in any way possible, whatever the problems might be, but I'm afraid that opening up my pc to a total stranger is something I'm not willing to do. It's not that I don't trust them, it's simply something I'm not prepared to do.

I seem to remember we both suffer from 4xhybrid T2 tuners not being able to record simultaneously on an ET10k.

My comment was a "tongue in cheek" reference to that.

Unfortunately, my sense of humour always seems to backfire on this forum, so I really must try to resist in the future.

I've tried plenty of times to reproduce this problem, telnet is not showing up any issues at the moment.

Playing a NAS recording in another room using a fire tv is constantly buffering and unwatchable, it's never happened before.
(on 4.2.028 now.) I've moved back to 4.2.026 and playback thru' the fire tv is working fine.

Testing on 028, playback of the same NAS recording was much improved today, but it did eventually become unwatchable.

Debug logs show nothing.

The best I can do is keep on eye on it.

It may just be a "typical/to be expected" Wi-Fi problem, but it's odd that it happened for the very 1st time on the same day I updated to 028.

I've tried plenty of times to reproduce this problem, telnet is not showing up any issues at the moment.I only noticed the problem when debug logs were switched off (and the hd not in constant use), and oddly, trying again this morning the issue was back again with debugging off.
The only thing I can think of is the hd spinning down and back on again - I've tried changing the spin down time to 30 seconds to see if there's a pattern, but there's nothing obvious.
I wonder if the hd is creating interference when spinning up/down?

You'll have to go back to 026, the driver install crashes the box.

I reported it on GitHub 8 days ago, but there has been absolutely no response.

If you haven't an image copy of 026, it will be a struggle to get 026 running again.

I have had the same issue, switched to openpli for the moment, everything working okay, relievedWhich kernel is it using?

FozzyBear
25-02-17, 22:57
I'm no expert, I used the very latest openpli 4, dated 17/2. Since I had updated my openvix and lost the sundtek USB I had to revert an older vix image but it kept crashing. Eventually the machine wouldn't even reboot. I tried flashing the latest openpli and I have things pretty much where they were with the sundtek working great.

My sundtek is working fine with latest vix image on an ET5000...

FozzyBear
26-02-17, 09:39
As I said, I'm no expert. My ET8000 flashed with the latest vix without any problems, but I couldn't get the sundtek set up. Every time the box wouldn't reboot, and I tried everything. I'll try the vix again when I get the idea that the issue has been sorted.

Which kernel is it using?
OpenPLi 4 2017-02-26/ET10000 has kernel 4.0.1

My sundtek is working fine with latest vix image on an ET5000...That will be because there hasn't been a kernel upgrade on that model.

FozzyBear

As I said I'm no expert, I flashed the latest vix with no problems but I couldn't install the sundtek. My ET8000 wouldn't reboot and I tried it multiple times in multiple ways. It worked first time on openpli. I will try vix again when issue is resolved.

ccs

I will try vix again when issue is resolved.Let's hope it won't be too long, it's not been working on the new kernel for over a month now, and no progress has been made as far as I'm aware.

Please report your USB tuner issue on github here https://github.com/oe-alliance/oe-alliance-core/commit/e131668d76b81bb7c14983f6b5cc76e7df6d1c4e

Hopefully, a new update means what it says, rather than the (obvious) solution of going back to the original kernel.

Well, it looks like there may be a solution in sight. I've just had a reply to my original comment....A workaround has been available for a month, and they haven't let us use it. No doubt any "new" kernel/drivers will also be put in place without any testing for USB tuners as well.

02-04-17, 14:05
It is a reponse to USB tuner problem, so one would hope that it both fixes both USB tuners and kernel issues, which for a box they didn't commit to support would be good:)
...... but as always until it arrives ... :)

A workaround has been available for a month, and they haven't let us use it. No doubt any "new" kernel/drivers will also be put in place without any testing for USB tuners as well.Well, let's wait and see. I'd much prefer a fix than a workaround, but waiting over 2 months is pushing it a bit.
My guess is that if they had gone back to the earlier kernel, no fix would ever have been produced.

ccs

... I see that there are, indeed, some "interesting" developments :), but usb tuners and (hopefully) usb wifi will do for me.

My guess is that if they had gone back to the earlier kernel, no fix would ever have been produced. So you reckon that if you do a software update and it fails you should live with a broken system, rather than backing out the change and waiting for a fixed update?

... I see that there are, indeed, some "interesting" developments :), but usb tuners and (hopefully) usb wifi will do for me.

So you reckon that if you do a software update and it fails you should live with a broken system, rather than backing out the change and waiting for a fixed update? It depends what you mean by "broke", my isn't broke because I chose to "revert" to 4.2.026 until a fix was found.
I was fortunate enough to not need the feeds to keep it going.
Me making noises to get it fixed wasn't going to make a scrap of difference and it's not as if the site was flooded with complaints.

As I said before, I much prefer a fix to a workaround, but will be very disappointed if I have to stick with 4.2.026 - that's when I, personally, would want the earlier kernel putting back.

Maybe Xtrend are now using the ET10K (and others) as a basis for future developments, that doesn't bother me at all.

It's not the end of the world at the moment, but I would like my ET10K to keep up with ViX updates for a bit longer yet.

I see in anther thread that problems with USB tuners & Vu+ were solved with 5.0.009, so I thought it was worth a try on my Xtrend with 5.0.011 - No obvious improvement.

Have any Xtrend users tried OpenATV image after the latest kernel change?

The other post was related to Vu+, completely different issue to the Xtrend's.

So I am thinking of installing a sundtek USB cable tuner on my sisters et8000, is this issue fixed (late to the party)?

It no longer crashes enigma2 with my PCTV triplestick, but that seems to be because the Xtrend dvb module no longer sees it at all.

I haven't, but I assume from your question the latest 4.10.6 kernel is now in OpenATV - I've been assuming only the test version had it in as I haven't found any indication that it's gone live. Where should I have been looking?
I've never used it before, so it could take a while.

Went into the OE-A 13/4/2017, so as OpenATV do nightly builds would be in latest build.

I've got OpenATV up and running ok, and the SundTek tuner now is configured ok, but I'm struggling to make it the preferred tuner to test it.

Disabling the other tuners doesn't seem to work - tuner A is still used and says it's enabled even though the config says " nothing connected".

Scan only found 33 channels, signal finder didn't seem too happy either, couch flashing vix now.

Signal finder on 4.2.026 works ok.

I'll have another go later.

@birdman has kindly produced an openvix-5.0.013.001.developer image for me, and so far so good, the SundTek usb tuner appears to be working fine on the ET10K.

Many thanks to all concerned.

It works OK (I can do a scan with it using dvbv5-scan from a Debian mips distro), but Enigma2 isn't being told about its existence, so it can't use it as it has no idea that it's there.

Will birdman need to do a commit, or will it pull into the next build automatically?

twol

It's already in the OE-A (driver change) so automatically in next ViX release build

Found elsewhere ........... for driver
DVB USB Tuner works
SATIP works again
Ciplus works only with Tuner in Slot A and Slot B

Less good news for the PCTV triplestick.OK. Captain came up with a fix for OpenATV and I've tested it on OpenViX 5.0.013.003.
I've submitted a pull request:
https://github.com/OpenViX/enigma2/pull/158

It looks like a bit of a kludge, but it does work. My suspicion is that you should read the symlink at /sys/class/dvb/dvb%d.frontend%d/device/subsystem and check that it ends with /bus/usb (or just /usb). But the end effect is the same - "is this a USB device?" - which is all that the code is trying to find out (and if it has any endpoint file then it is).

EDIT: that pull request was against master (not sure how). Trying again....

So I had a look at the libsysfs source and it does what I was thinking about in #95.
And I've unexpectedly had time to implement and test it (successfully) this afternoon, so I'll post another pull request to do a "more natural" test for "is this a usb device?".
