Give us a little more information on this.... What setup do you have, fixed dish, monoblock, motorised etc. and what config do you have the tuner(s) set to. I'd guess its a tuner config problem but if you give us a bit more info sure we can get to the bottom of it :)
See attached screenshot. Make sure you set type of scan to single satellite and set the correct satellite to hotbird 13deg.

Ok what image are you using at the moment? To save a while why not take a look at this thread here http://www.vuplus-support.co.uk/showthread.php?360-VuPlus-Support.co.uk-OpenPLi-powered-backup-image-for-newbie%E2%80%99s and you will probably be fully up and running in no time.
followed instructions so far good, but scanning astra and hotbird seems to take forever is this right

Well yes could well do, there are hundreds and hundreds of channels between these two sats, but to save time again rather than doing a manual scan why don't you take a look at the E2 settings in the forum here, if you transfer these to the VU+ it'll save you all the time of having to scan them all in and they'll be in a nice grouped order as well.... I like catseye settings personally but there are a few you can give a go to see what suits you.
am new to all this any help in showing how to transfer to the vu + please.

You can use Dreamboxedit to transfer setting/bouquets to your VU+ Duo.
Theres a manual here http://www.vuplus-support.co.uk/showthread.php?27-DreamBox-Edit-How-to-manual Dreamboxedit here http://www.vuplus-support.co.uk/showthread.php?12-DreamBoxEdit-3.0.0.0 and here's a screenshot of the correct settings, just change the IP to suit your receiver.
