Seriously? This guy's a hacker and he plugged his computer directly onto the net - no router? no firewall? Wow.

The fact that the numpty did the same isn't too shocking, but this guy had dyndns running, so he was obviously doing the same. I have dyndns on my router and a couple of services running on non-standard ports - but he had the whole thing unlocked :D. ssh and vnc all running on standard configs - wouldn't be surprised if he was running a couple of network shares too :).

OK, he was lucky that he did that (as my approach really wouldn't work to recover it - on tother hand, unless they're a bit of linux geek, the only resort they'd have is to reinstall the box anyway...), but, sheesh :).
