Apologies if this has been posted before, but ive only seen posts relating to wireless USB dongles and not this type, i.e pay as you go wireless USB dongle for laptops etc where no internet is available.

My question is, will one of these dongles work with the Vu+ Duo? And can anyone recomend a working provider 02, Vodafone, 3 etc.

My reason for asking is that i need to move temporarily to a house with no internet until repairs are completed at my own place.

What are you trying to achieve?
If you are simply trying to connect your box to the internet then you will need a 3g router (I use an Edimax 6200n).
Note that broadband dongles do not work with port-forwarding so no inwards connections to box.

Any network is fine - just check coverage first.
Three do a 3 month sim with 3GB on it which can be picked up for under a tenner on a well-know auction site - if you need need internet for PC also, then 3GB won't be enough (you'll probably need 3GB/month for basic surfing and email).
You might want to look at T-Mobile's 1 year in advance offer with dongle @ around 70 notes on aforementioned auction site.
Another thing to be aware of is that most networks (all?) have a ludicrous content management system on them which means you cannot access "adult" sites without proving your age - ways of removing the lock vary - I find Vodafone the easiest - just go into any shop with the sim and ask them to do it (assuming you look over 18). T-Mobile want a passport or proof of ID!
Note that the word adult above does not = porn, as social network sites, betting sites etc are all censored.

not strictly true. i use a T-mobile web n walk dongle for the net while at work and i am a fairly heavy user with upwards of 60 to 70 hours a week. for surfing / emails and the odd download or two. and i'm only using a 3 gb per month contract. some times i do go slightly over but most of the time i dont.

Cheers for detailed reply plusser. I am simply trying to use a wireless pay and go dongle to allow the vu+ duo to connect to a friends external server so that i am not stuck with FTA channels for the next few months lol

But from the start of your post i imagine that simply plugging the dongle into the duo will not allow this to happen?

what you can do is get the router to go with the dongle then you can plug that into the duo

I have set up a friends linux box with a mix of mobile dongle and a 3g compatible router best to get one with Ethernet sockets so you can connect directly to your sat box to keep down latency

make sure you have a really strong reliable mobile connection first before spending your cash

Hi,

I am also looking to do this. Can you comment on what hardware was used to achieve this?

Thanks i advance.

I think you mis-understood my original post - the "3GB won't be enough" referred to the Three SIM which has 3GB on it (in total) and lasts for 3 months.

The above posts should be self-explanatory.....but you need:

1. 3G compatible Router (eg. Edimax 6200n)
2. 3G Broadband Dongle
3. 3G Broadband SIM

I have a 3g router with a 3g sim on orange at £5 per month for my mother to use with a openbox s9 it only has half a gig per month but well enough just to watch all the sky channels on a cs server.

The main factor is that you have a good strong signal on your 3g dongle some networks are better than others

by default most providers do only provide 3.6 meg speeds however these can easily be unlocked by flashing a de-branded or upgraded firmware to the dongle. as i did with my HUAWEI E220 on t-mobile.

vodafone actually say 7.2 and that what i have achived on a retail non unlocked dongle
