I need to install a new outdoor TV aerial and currently have scaffolding up around my house so access is easy at the minute.

I have run new coaxial cable but now need a new aerial to mount on the side of my house. There are so many to choose from and I have no idea what to choose. Does anybody have an recommendations? I currently live 3 miles from the Sheffield transmitter.

Any recommendations?

really does depend on which transmitter to get your signal from.
I am on Belmont which has the muxes spread across the whole band.
They recommend a "Log Periodic" like this one,...which don't have the rear reflector.

Over the top. It will present a large surface to the wind and will need a strong support.

There is a good reason why aerial installers will put a wire around the chimney and use a substantial bracket.

If you are only 3 miles from the transmitter try a log periodic aerial

Its wideband and fairly low gain. I have one that works well with a transmitter 30 miles away

For digital TV ideally you want the same quality of cable as for satellite with 100% copper screening such as Webro WF100.

Now that UK analogue TV has been switched off and the power on the digital transmitters increased you may get away with an aerial in the loft. In this case you need something short and a log periodic of around 1 metre length is ideal

BTW, the connection to a log periodic is at the opposite end to fixing end and the cable runs up one of the booms. Some come with a cable and F plug pre-fitted so you need a barrel F connector and some self amalgamating tape

Around 10/20p each on ebay

I should also say the one I've fitted is

which is a more robust construction with thicker elements screwed to the boom rather than thinner rods push fitted into the boom. I previously had a 'early' design log periodic made Vision which was of the latter construction. Although the push fit was tight interference fit with temperature cycling the elements tended to walk out of the holes in the boom. I believe the design was improved later.
