View Full Version : "write error failed" when recording anything?

Hi this problem has been persisting for some time and not sure what the cause is. Every time I try to record something it says write error failed. I have tried to initialise the HDD itself but to no avail as I get errors when trying to do so.

Is it possible my HDD is gone or box is faulty?

Would appreciate any replies.

If your HDD is in use, I.e. For EPG data, Timeshift etc you will be unable to Initialise the HDD.
For simplicity I advise to fresh flash your 3T with the latest ViX image (4.1-009) and proceed to initialise the disk once you have done the basic setup via FIW.

What do you mean by FIW?

I have tried to initialise the HDD itself but to no avail as I get errors when trying to do so.
The most simple way to do that is to attach an USB-stick, click in 'MountManager' on 'Use as HDD', reboot, and then initialise the HDD.
Don't forget to set the HDD again as HDD when done.

I dont get what you mean. I havent got a big USB stick, plus I want to try to initialise the HDD itself.

A small USB-stick is sufficient; it's just temporarily to release the real HDD so it can be initialized.
And indeed: the idea is to initialize the real HDD after the reboot.

I will give it a go first instead of having to flash from scratch.

But im not entirely show about the way to do it despite you tell me. Still kinda lost.

Rob I tried your step but it has no initialize option.

Don't know if I have done it wrong.

What do you mean by 'it'?
If you go to 'storage media' --> initialize you'll find all connected storage devices; make sure you choose the correct one (the real internal HDD).
If the drive doesn't show there, there is something very wrong (dead HDD, loose connector).

Ye done it again and the actual HDD doesnt show at all.

So is it dead then?

Try switching your box off a the mains for a few minutes.

On my box the HDD goes "missing" occasionally and the switch off 'cold boot' restores it.

It certainly looks that way.
If you're familiar with 'Telnet' you could do some tests:

- init 4
- umount /dev/mtdblock3
- e2fsck -v /dev/mtdblock3
- mount -o remount,rw /
- init 3

This command will do a complete check, and show process in the telnet window (omit the -D if you don't want it to try and optimise the directories of the filesystem) - change x to the correct location for the disk you're checking:
e2fsck -p -v -f -D -C0 /dev/sdx1

or:

umount /dev/sda1
e2fsck -f -v /dev/sda1
mount /dev/sda1

or

init 4
umount -a
e2fsck -f -C 0 -v /dev/sdx1

unmount -a will unmount all devices (you could just umount /dev/sdx1).

Also:

smartctl -a /dev/sda
(might need to install ' smartmontools ')

Yes I tried that too unfortunately still doesnt show up.

I guess I have to accept it is dead.

Unfortunately I dont know what or how to use commands with telnet.

Sorry wouldnt be able to do those tests.
