Firmware Upgrade?

I notice in Plugins, there is one called Firmware Upgrade.

Is this something I need to do, my box is 14 months old?

Will I need to reinstall V4 vix again if I do a firmware upgrade?

I know flashing firmware can brick things... so I thought I'd ask before trying that.
