problems with epg.dat in flash?

i have had files with strange filenames appear in flash serveral times now... when i check the contents i see binary data but also an "epg" string.
could it be that those garbage files are created during shutdown because the epg.dat could not be written properly back to flash?
just a thought.

i was always told to have epg data sent to usb or hdd and not to flash as when corrupted you end up reflashing box from the start.
