How can I change the size of the info bar to make it wider?

Not that easy is the answer. You can do it by editing the xml for the skin but you'd need a new png and you'd need to edit the xml to then rework where things are on the info bar.

If you don't like the look try another skin - confluence and you vix hd are good ones imo.

No. Try Bello or Confluence skins, they have big big info bars.
