Using usb to record

Guys im using a usb stick to instant record but id like to know how to set it so i can use the timer
I did try but it did not record
So had to press the instant record

By default, the recording path is the same whether you use instant record or timer record. Double check you have not changed it to anything else. If there is no sata HDD, a USB stick will be mounted as /media/hdd/

What did it do?

Were you unable to set a timer, or
did you set a timer which never ran, or
did you set a timer which did run but you can find no recording file?

There's a big difference between the three.
