I install a clean image, install my chosen plugins and do an image backup. I end up with the usual 3 files, the main one being root_cfe_auto.jffs2 weighing in at 42MB.

A couple of months later I want to tweak some bits so I firstly take a clean backup, but this time the root_cfe_auto.jffs2 file has gone up to 110MB in size??

Any idea why the bloatedness? Is there a recyle bin style directory I need to clean out regularly?

I regularly do the software updates through software management menu. I've not done anything silly like copy any files onto the box anywhere. The backup is done after a fresh reboot.

Anyone else experience this and know how to sort it out?

New Channel updates, epg data, crashlogs, picons maybe

how many plugins have you installed?

nezzeo

No new picons
Plugins - none since the last backup
Crashlogs - maybe, where can i find these? I can see enigma2_crash_xxxxxxxx.log in /media/hdd but this is the Hard drive of course - are there any others stored anywhere?
EPG Data - maybe, but unless its keeping all the data since the original backup then surely 50MB is excessive for (just sky 28.2E) EPG. I'm happy to have a look - where abouts is it stored? I can see /media/hdd/epg.dat but this is on the Hard drive also
New Channel updates - do you just mean /etc/enigma2/ ? There's nothing excessive in there

FTP into your main folder in Windows Explorer ftp://bm750

Once in there you can right click on folders and get details of the size each folder is, I'd have a look at the 'etc' and 'tmp' folders to make sure they arn't abnormally large. If you have an FTP client such as filezilla installed you could download all the files and do a search for certain file extensions such as *.dat and *.img to see if you are doing something silly, like making a back up of an img which has a backup of an img already in it!

Hmm... not quite as simple as I'd have hoped, what with all the symlinks etc. Concerned about the /proc folder:

is that about normal file listing? Each numbered folder has the same contents

I'm not sure tbh I'm offshore working for a week so can't check my box to find out.

What size in the folder containing all these files? is it big enough to make the file size jump in two?

nezzeo
14-12-10, 22:59
Its hard to get a true size because of the recursive symlinks, but there's nothing over 1Mb apart from 2 .so files
Just wondered what with so many it looked almost incremental so was that causing some issues.

Still downloading the rest of the image see if I can find much else

Biggest one file is a \lib\modules\2.6.18-7.3\extra\dvb-bcm7335.so 6MB file, then 2 or 3 1MB to 3Mb files and the rest are just in the hundreds of k all the way down to 0k
So nothing stupid that I can see. Admitedly the /usr folder is 90MB, so maybe this is the culprit but this condenses down to 20mb when winRAR'd.

Think the only way I'm getting get out of this is reflash, do my plugins/updates and then retest.

Anyone else able to do a backup image and give me an indication of how big they're backup file is?
