View Full Version : AVI files
Hi. I don't seem to be able to play avi files on my solo2 (apollo 166) Is it possible? I've tried both FTP to internal HDD, and via USB. All I get I sporadic audio but no video.
avi files play fine if encoded properly.
Maybe try re-encoding with an app like handbrake.

Hi mate I always use freemake video converter free and convert to MKV format..plays perfectly from hard drive plus small file size.
So AVi file won't play unless converted to another format.
I've been useing YTD to convert avi to MP4 and they play fine. So I'll just continue to do that.
Hi,
that was not said. AVI plays fine with the proper content. AVI is only a container so it can contain different audio and video formats and not all formats can be played.
ciao
IIRC an AVI file is a container format, so it can contain video and audio components in various formats.
The issue is what format those components are in.
I have an AVI file I downloaded and it plays fine.
The component formats are:
file (the RIFF part is the AVI container):
Download.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 272 x 208, 29.97 fps, video: DivX 5, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)
mplayer:
Selected video codec: MPEG-4 part 2 [libavcodec]
Selected audio codec: MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 layers I, II, III [mpg123]
AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 160.0 kbit/10.42% (ratio: 20000->192000)
As birdman says AVI's are not a format in their own rite but a container, you must ensure the files contained in the AVI are properly encoded otherwise they wont work properly on your receiver.
Thanks for the explanation guys. I understand now. (I think)
