I would seriously look into getting an HDMI Extender over Cat5/6, far superior to the rf senders etc
Triax tri-link kit works exactly same as sly eye, over coax.

Coax is horrible in comparison to HDMI/Cat5

True, but I'm assuming he's come from a sky set up and looking for an easy fix, rather than wiring in cat5 cable.

How does the hdmi extender work, would I need to run cat5 between the 2 boxes and if so could I use a powerline adapter
You also need to ask how channel changing works through the hdmi extender
Homeplugs dont work im afraid

What receiver you have? Not many have RF outputs. You may have to use an RF modulator.
If you have a Samsung smart TV, this might be of interest to you.

Think I might end up just setting up another box in the other room
As for tv I have a Sony 8 series smart tv so can't use that app unfortunately
what about using the web interface to change channels?

You can use a phone app like enigma2 etc to change channels using the HDMI Extender over Cat5 method. Picture quality is excellent, far better than any crappy magic eye type sender.
I have all my home cinema equipment and sat receiver located in a large high board that is all out of sight and purchased for this particular purpose a product from Amazon UK a IR Blaster from Neet which was not that expensive .......just a suggestion http://www.amazon.co.uk/NeetŪ-IR-HUB-Infrared-Extender-BLACK/dp/B00H9DQGEK
