How to adjust file size of recordings?

Hi, I tried to record a program but 30 mins took up 4gb. Is there a way to reduce this please?

I have looked in Recording Settings but I can't see this function.

sorry but there is no way to do that on the fly, you can convert or remux the finished recording to remove other language tracks or subtitles etc, but that has to be done after the recording has been completed and via a PC not on the receiver.

A recording always consists of the complete (demuxed) TS-stream as it was broadcasted by the service.
So the size per hour depends on the codec used (SD/HD) and the (often variable) bitrate, as well as the number and kinds of audio tracks.

It certainly would be a cool feature to have the ability to choose the what gets included in a recording prior to it being recorded but thats a hardware issue and likely never going to happen.

The major part is the video stream anyway, so you won't be able to gain very much.

How do you get 1080p recordings then? There are no transmissions in 1080p.

I think the O/P just means HD 1080 recordings. Her A/V amp or GI XPEED may be set to 1080p output. 4GB is pretty big for a 30 minute recording, though. Usually I see 3GB or thereabouts, even on a high bit rate channel with 1920x1080.

Hi, yeah sorry I just assumed because it was a HD channel it would be a 1080p recording.

The problem I now realise isn't that the recording are so big, it's that there is a write error message when it gets to 4gb and stops recording even though the USB stick is 64gb and it's been formatted in FAT32 using the gui tool.

Does anyone know why the write error would appear around the 4gb mark and stop recording please?

That is the maximum file size for fat32. If you want to have bigger files then you must format the stick as ext4 with the receiver. Your other option is to record from an sd channel rather than a hd channel if there is one available - the recordings will be much smaller.

Indeed: 4GB is the maximum filesize on FAT32. If you format the stick to NTFS there will be no maximum size.
However: Ext4 is a better format; the box can do that for you.
And there are Windows drivers for Ext4 if you would want to use the stick in your PC.

Hi Rob, thanks for replying. I did Mount the USB on the box and it said I had to Restart for it to finish so I did that. Isn't that creating the Ext4?

No that just mounted the stick to your network, you would have to go into the HDD settings page and initialize (format) it from there.
