made some 1080 bootlogos

extract the zips and put the files into /etc/enigma2

No you place them into /etc/enigma2/ in ViX so they act as user files without overwriting the default system files, same as with the satellites.xml and other user / system files.

Can these bootlogos be used if I haven't selected a 1080 skin?

*edit* just tried, yes you can.

EDIT:
...although it occurs to me that I could easily add a boot script which randomly changes the file to be used at next boot time, which would have the same effect.

If I put these in /etc/enigma2 can I change between these and the default ones in /usr/share? OR do I delete the originals to force the new one(s) to load?

To answer my own question. Just put the selected backdrop into etc/enigma2 and the box does the rest. Fantastic.
