Enigma box without user input!

If I were to set up a box with the latest image, channel list, cross epg,etc for someone who would want it for nothing other than watching tv would it continue to work adequately without any future user input?

yes for you would not be able to say for exactly how long, like all computers these receivers do sometimes just out of the blue develop issues for no apparent reason so regular maintenance is a must in my opinion. simply making a full set of backups once setup would be a good start but eventually someone (you or the receivers new owner), would have to pitch in and reflash or trouble shoot something on the receiver.

The receivers new owner would be my 71 year old dad so i guess I'll be the one having to do the maintenance!:D

Just make sure you make a complete image backup onto a USB stick once you are happy with the setup, you should be fine with that.

Channel lists need updating. ABM/Autobouquets scheduled to run regularly would be a better option.

Yes I was intending to set the box up so it would update the bouquets and epg daily. To avoid the usual moaning about not knowing whats on the channels.:D

I'd guess your old man only watches a handful of channels that rarely change?
Put a current stable build on it, no extra plugins. Run ABM & set-up CrossEPG to auto update in the early hours. Install any cams you need from the plugin feeds.
It should be fine for months/years without issue. Update it when you visit him if you really want to update it.
Or VPN from your house to his, then you can update & fix any issues remotely.

My VPN skills would be somewhere between poor and non existent, but like everything else I could pick it up if i really put my mind to it or I could jump into the car and drive the 2 miles to my parents house which would be a lot less challenging for me! Use teamviewer for remote access to fix any issues, providing he has a pc. I've been using it to maintain my mothers receiver for years it couldn't be easier to set up.
