View Full Version : New User - Low Priority - HD folder structure puzzle
Hi
Elsewhere on the forum (VIX section), I read of a file called Terrestrial.xml, pertinent to an issue I had when I first tried scanning for my local transmitter (no channels found). The 'no channels' is not what this post is about though as I used Europe Africa etc and found the channels.
Anyway, I wondered what my Terrestrial.xml file held with respect to the Blackhill transmitter and so went looking for it.
A windows search on the Root folder of the GigaBlue internal HDD revealed about 20 hits, but I noticed that there seemed to be a strange hierarchy for the various paths it produced (I have never previously used a Linux system).
For example, here is one of the paths (one of the shorter ones):
"\\GBQUADPLUS\Root\proc\15559\root\proc\15559\root\ proc\15559\root\proc\15559\root\proc\15559\root\pr oc\15559\root\proc\15761\root\proc\15761\root\proc \15761\root\proc\15761\root\share\terrestrial.xml"
Why would there be multiple sort of recursive paths like this - all one inside the other instead of what I'm used to on my Win7 system? Is this a valid path? It seems to be as I chased it all the way down and it seems it is all there on the disc alright.
I had it in my mind that perhaps that file need updating or something in light of the 'no channels' mentioned above as I also found what seems to be a 'Master' version of this data here:
https://github.com/oe-alliance/oe-alliance-tuxbox-common/blob/master/src/terrestrial.xml
and there is a difference in the sections pertinent to my local copy of the file.
I don't plan on doing anything crazy to my box operating system, but I find the above details strange.
Can anyone shed any light on the above?

The terretsrial.xml file is located at /etc/tuxbox/
Post what your transmitter is from the list here

My local transmitter is Blackhill, and the contents of the Terrestril.xml in the path you posted is the same as that in the file on the path I posted above, but both differ from the contents in the site I linked to above.

Can you try this xml file? Restart the receiver after transferring. Select United Kingdom in the tuner configuration.
Rather than list all the transmitters, I have listed all the frequencies.
EDIT: New attachment in post 12
Hi
Thanks for that I will try it tomorrow.
For example, here is one of the paths (one of the shorter ones):
"\\GBQUADPLUS\Root\proc\15559\root\proc\15559\root\ proc\15559\root\proc\15559\root\proc\15559\root\pr oc\15559\root\proc\15761\root\proc\15761\root\proc \15761\root\proc\15761\root\share\terrestrial.xml"
Why would there be multiple sort of recursive paths like thisProbably because whatever you are using to look for files on MS Windows doesn't understand about symbolic links on Linux, so follows them.
On Linux the proc file-system is a virtual one (it's just listing information directly form the kernel) about each process. One of these bits of info is a symbolic links called root, which points to where that process's actual root is within the real root file=-system (it might be chrooted for security, or running an emulator such as qemu).
So the file patch is valid, but nonsensical, since it's just recursing through the link in a loop.
You really just want to scan the / file system, not others mounted under it, but it looks like you'll be accessing this through Samba, and so it looks like that is configured to cross file-systems.
... pertinent to an issue I had when I first tried scanning for my local transmitter (no channels found). The 'no channels' is not what this post is about though as I used Europe Africa etc and found the channels.I had the same issue (no channels found) when configuring my tuners for the Sandy Heath transmitter. It only seemed to scan channel 42 (whereas the transmitter broadcasts on 21, 24, 27, 32, 48, 51 and 52, with 34 joining in some time later this year). I also resolved this with a full Euro scan instead.
The problem I have now is that the scan doesn't pick up the designated Freeview(HD) channels, which is annoying when you only have Freeview as you tend to use channel numbers (and broadcasters often say, on Freeview channel X).
Is there anyway to get these set correctly?
And are there any Bouguets configurations(?) available for Freeview HD, rather than just Freeview?

ABM does not do HD channels yet. You could use it for the SD ones and manually move the HD ones into place.

But is there any way to set the channel numbers. BBC ONE HD should be on 101, not 71.
Hi
Thanks Birdman, I see what you mean there. I was using Win 7 search under the Start menu bar, then changed to a Custom search in that to the box.
It did look very strange to me :)

Well, I tried that file, but although I was initially very pleased to see the HD channels appear (I couldn't get them previously), when it finished scanning and I tried it on a channel (a whole bunch of them actually). there was no sound at all, but perfect pictures.
After I reverted to the original, I get no HD channels, but got the sound back.
Thanks for trying though.

I have added the other frequencies for black hill if you want to try.

That is a lot better as I have both perfect picture and sound. Thanks for your work on this. Is this likely to make its way into the default images from now?

Probably.
Can you try the UK ones. Use settings as in this picture please.

Hi
In my case, I used Autoscan this time, but I did normally use Manual scan with those settings. Do you want me to re-tune again Manually? No problem if that is what you want me to do.

Problem with terrestrial is you have to be in that location to test properly. I tested here and was OK.
I would appreciate it if you could change your tuner config to United Kingdom and perform the manual scan. If you feel adventurous, you can remove all existing settings by the following command in telnet. Obviously back up first.
init 4 && rm -rf /etc/enigma2/lamedb && rm -rf /etc/enigma2/*.tv && rm -rf /etc/enigma2/*.radio && init 3
Hi
I can do a settings backup and factory reset if you want, I know nothing of telnet. Would that be OK for the test?

A manual scan with clear settings should do. Much appreciated.
For another occasion. Should you be interested, (you will need to at some stage or other).
For Telnet I use a program called Putty.
Hi
What should I do to get 'clear settings' if not to factory settings?

Menu > Setup > Service Seraching > Manual Scan
Scroll down and toggle right/left to alter options.
Hi
Ah that. That I do know about. Sorry, I thought you were talking about ALL user settings. OK, I will report back as soon as this recording is finished.
Hi
Well, problems did arise. After doing the scan as you said, when finished and back to live TV, I was getting a cycle of good normal picture/sound for about 30 seconds or so up to a couple of minutes, followed by a black screen with only "EC/PVR" in top left corner - this for about 20 or 30 seconds or so and then back to live TV - continuously, with only the time spans varying.
I then performed an Autoscan as that was what I did first time around, but unfortunately, that too displayed the same cycle of blank/live TV. I am about to revert to the original Terrestrial.xml
In fact, as I was typing this, it is in black screen mode with no response from the remote at all - now for about 10 minutes - I will need to do a switch off I think.
Hi
It was worse than I thought, am now in the process of re-flashing.

Sorry to hear. Thanks for testing/contributing.
Hi
No problem, it is good practice for me - one way to learn a new box :)

Highly unlikely any xml file would cause those issues.
Something else wrong, but a new flash should fix it.
Hi
Yes, I was surprised. I did exactly the same procedure as I had done with the earlier version. I just renamed the existing terrestrial.xml, copied over the new one, and restarted.

What are you trasnferring with? I use Filezilla with Notepad++ (not windows notepad) as the default editor.

I have Samba activated on the box and transfer the file via that. I didn't open the file at all (I did with the other version just to see what you had added - not that I understood it though)
The issue here, I think, is that @leshay is picking up one or more weaker transmitters resulting in marginal reception of some multiplexes which causes the picture to come and go on the TV. You need to establish exactly which UHF channels (frequencies) are appropriate for his exact location and scan only those. As I understand it, if a weaker multiplex is scanned first, then the lamedb is populated with the SIDs, PIDs etc for that group of TV stations. If a higher strength multiplex carrying the same TV channels is later scanned then I don't think they are populated in lamedb because the SIDs, PIDs etc are the same. I have that issue when I scan the Irish DVB-T channels. I pick up the weaker stations first and the stronger ones won't populate. I have to use the specific UHF channels for my area repeater in order to set up terrestrial reception properly. It doesn't matter whether you are doing an E2 scan (using the built-in xml) or ABM - you must specify the exact set of transmitter channels/frequencies which beam into your location. Anything else is going to result in less than optimal signal quality with consequent impact on the stability of the picture on your TV. Can't really do any detailed lookups as I am on holidays and using crappy wifi.
A good place for getting all frequencies for individual UK Freeview transmitters is:

Hi
Well, I had another severe problem (probably of my own making). Somehow, I started getting the rotating VIX image every key press when in any menu. OK, decided I needed a new re-flash, so, I figured I would try your Terrestrial.xml file again (I am getting used to the process now  )
So,re-flashed, minimal set up to get Network, copied over your file, performed a shutdown and switch off (which I do not remember doing that time I had the trouble) - restarted and set all necessary settings including tuning.
Again, got all HD channels and all OK.
Just to check, since the above, I have shutdown/restarted several times and still all OK.
I *think* all is well, and I apologize for messing it up last time, and am currently eating my humble pie

Just so that you are aware, you can make a full image backup.
Blue> Vix > Image Manager > Green for new backup
Benefit of this is that you can save a fully working image. You can then tinker as much as you like. If it goes wrong, you can be back to the last saved image instantly. You can transfer to to USB should you wish. Have a read of the Manual that Rob worked so dilligently on for your experiments. (Link in signature)
