I have been getting "the feeds are down for maintenance" periodically as I check for more than 10 hours now. I have rebooted my router, reflashed with and without restore and checked wget exists in /usr/bin. If I do opkg update it fails.

Feeds back up since around 8pm. Mite be worth turning off unstable feeds, otherwise you will constantly find packages that won't update.

Fine for adding plugins though :)

Feeds back up for me, but it says 357 packages to update from Apollo 003 to 005 this is for a duo, surely that can't be correct?

Any mod have an opinion?

For such a large online update would it not be best to fresh flash again?

Vu Duo 2 tried updating from apollo 003 to apollo 005 300+ updates box goes thru procedure then turns off have to use remote to turn back on and when i do box has not updated but is still on apollo 003 maybe that is why updates are still set to unstable

I understand the updates were set as unstable, but I thought the builds were tested via beta testers first?

If so ....surely failing to update and boot incorrectly would've been spotted?

personally I usually do a fresh flash each time with beta's and I know others do the same - we can if you prefer remove user access to unstable images

No that is not how it works.

Most of the time we test updates for specific bug fixes manually by FTP'ing test files to our receivers and when we are happy those fixes work they are submitted to the central GIT @GITHUB along with the others, this can sometimes mean we have tens or hundreds of such fixes on the GIT at any one time.

Our feeds are tied directly into this GIT so when Andy hits the build button they are published directly to the end user via the online update option, we do have the option to withhold them if we feel the need for specific testing but that is not always necessary and it's also why we have the stable and unstable feeds system in place, so users can have a choice to update or not. most of the time this works fine and when it does you hear nothing about it, but when it does not we post on the forum or via other social media outlets to let our users know.

we used to only release Images very infrequently and only when every single part was tested, tested and tested again, which resulted in one or two images a year, for which our users gave us no end of grief, they demanded updates now weather they were tested or not,

Stable & UnStable updates were introduced for this exact reason.
Not all builds for all boxes complete, no team member has all supported boxes to test on or even if they did, updating 35+ boxes a day isn't feasible.
Enabling unstable updates can cause issues, but helps us narrow them down when issues are reported properly.
If anyone doesn't want to help testing, stick to stable images.

Go back to fewer images. I don't understand why people want an update every day

It is always a good idea to make a full image backup before testing anything new and saving to a PC. If things don't work out, you can reflash to a last working state without having to reconfigure. This applies to testing an image or testing plugins.

Make a post with logs so the issue can be investigated. This is constructive feedback and helps to track down the issue and then hopefully resolve it.

Sorry if it offends, not my intentions. There are some people who report issues in a manner that is neither helpful nor sheds any light on what the real issue is. If it applies to you, please review merits, (if any), of this approach.

The post above nails it. Make an image backup before updating, it doesn't take long and restore if things don't work out. Or don't install unstable updates (or indeed any updates) but when things go wrong accept you may have to come up to date to get support.

I've just flashed to apollo 003 via usb, had enabled unstable updates to do this before. Trying to put backup settings on and its not having it due to feeds being down. :(

settings will restore but not any plugins you installed from the feeds as it will have to download those from the feeds.

For Apollo 003 should we enable "unstable updates" to install plugins via the feeds? Or is the feed actually down?

Just leave it for now while we investigate why build 005 failed to build. Once we know and the feeds are restored we will announce it on the forum.
