View Full Version : Vu+ Solo2 causing internet problems.

I'm hoping someone can help. Got a problem that has people baffled, and by all accounts you the man!

Either my picture freezes and glitches OR it's perfect and my internet speed slows to a snails pace causing devices to not access the internet. The internet is only restored by turning off the box using the switch at the back. When the box is back on the picture glitches and so the cycle begins again...

I'm at a total loss.

My equipment is a Vu+ Solo2 (bought this week from World of Satellite) Vix, Helios 008. Mgcamd 1.35a. Box is wired to my router and I have fibre broadband.

Your mgcamd config file is the most likely culprit. Make sure logging is disabled {L 0}

coach
26-04-14, 19:25
I'll certainly try it. How would I do that? Bit of a rookie, have FTP set up though.

coach

I looked and I have this;
# Log option, summ of:
# 00 off
# 01 network udp log
# 02 log to console
# 04 file, appended ! delete it by yourself, before it eat all your hdd
# + IP udp-port log-file-name
L: { 03 } 172.16.1.1 28007 /tmp/mgcamd.log

Larry-G
26-04-14, 19:54
as already said set the L: value to 00 which disables logging, as your essentially DDOS'ing your self.

coach
26-04-14, 19:59
Ok, sorry, I am new to this and still learning.

so I am to change L: { 03 } 172.16.1.1 28007 /tmp/mgcamd.log to L: { 00 } 172.16.1.1 28007 /tmp/mgcamd.log

Brilliant. Thank you.

did it work??????????

coach
26-04-14, 22:38
The picture was unstable for an hour or, then stabilised. My laptop struggled for internet but not both picture and internet seem to be working.

I have my fingers crossed.

coach
26-04-14, 22:45
just out of interest, as I said I am learning. Why would the log slow my internet down causing my lap top and then other devices to not be able to connect?

chaser
26-04-14, 22:50
If you haven't done so already, you probably need to restart your cam after making these changes to the config file.

just out of interest, as I said I am learning. Why would the log slow my internet down causing my lap top and then other devices to not be able to connect?

Because you're trying to log to a computer that's not on your local network.

coach
26-04-14, 23:10
I've also reserved the address of my Solo2 on my router, hoping that will help. Thought it couldn't hurt.

coach
26-04-14, 23:24
to restart my cam is that just by going setup/ softcam/ restart?

Blue button -> Softcam Manager -> yellow button.

coach
27-04-14, 00:05
I've turned off the log,
reserved the solo2 ip address,
reset cam,
reset router,
tried cccam instead of mgcamd,

still the same problems. Either frozen picture or perfect picture and slow to no internet.

The box has crashed a few times too. Once when changing cams, once when looking at transcoding and once when rebooting.

It did that 27 times. I don't have the log for when it crashed changing cams or looking at transcoding. I restored a back up due to the problems.

27-04-14, 00:25
What build are you currently using? what build did you restore a settings backup from?

coach
27-04-14, 00:29
Build is Helios 008, back up from helios 001, I think. Could have been 006

coach

I only got the box on Wednesday from World of Satellite and it came with 001.

judge

Try a fresh flash of Helios 010 with no settings backups, currently available on http://www.openvix.co.uk/index.php?dir=Vu%2BSolo2/

coach
27-04-14, 00:41
are there any obvious problems from the log?

coach
27-04-14, 00:42
do i just put the file on a usb and plug it in?

judge
27-04-14, 00:43
I only got the box on Wednesday from World of Satellite and it came with 001.
Sounds like you've added some flakey plugins/config files & your restore is re-adding these issues.
Better off just setting up from scratch on 010 for now.

coach
27-04-14, 00:51
should I factory reset and then flash?

judge
27-04-14, 00:55
No need to factory reset as flashing wipes the flash.
Just extract the build to a USB stick or download & flash using the inbuilt image manager.
Flashing tutorials are also available on http://openvix.co.uk

i've noticed that its my internet and once a week i have to switch off for a few minutes and put it back on and everything fine, getting about 10meg. tried installing Mgcamd 1.35a and setup but same issue.

coach
27-04-14, 11:02
When the internet slows with mine I turn the Vu SOlo2 box off via the remote the internet then works perfectly. I turn it back on from stand by and the internet stops. This suggests the problem is with the Solo.

I've reset the router and still this problem persists.

I'm going to try a flash of the newest Helios and see if that works.

coach
27-04-14, 11:07
It's also so inconsistent. Right now everything, internet and picture are fine and have been all morning. However what happens next is one will give, usually the internet.

try flashing with helios 010, 006 or 004

Just has an addition to this I updated both my solo2 and duo2 to Helios 006 from Zeus on Wednesday night, both use mgcamd 1.35a, on completion of both upgrades my email, Internet etc came to an annoying crawl, virtually every command would time out, my router webif became unresponsive, even power cycling my my router and modem didnt fix it after tearing the last bit if my hair out I unplugged both the duo2 and solo2 network cables and the network just pinged back to life again, I then easily did a reboot of the router from web if, plugged both the cables back in and it all seems to have been fine, so I would have to agree something somewhere seems to go a bit wobbly.

Hello,

I appear (hope I haven't spoken too soon) to have had some success.

My picture has stabilised and my internet has been working as normal

I'm not entirely sure how I managed it, but this is what I did;

Turned off the mgcamd log. Gave my Solo2 a reserved ip address on my router.

I then tried to flash it to Helios 010. However I realised I didn't know how to do this. Although whilst trying I turned my Solo2 off and back on at the back of the box.

Since then, it's worked like a dream!

28-04-14, 14:52
When turning your box off at the back make sure you shut it down first from the menu (deep standby)

I've checked and all settings preserved, epg still present and I have a pulse. Although won't try it again!

So, randomly at around 7pm the problems started again.

Picture freezing every 10 to 15 minutes.

Does anyone know what the issue could be?

Could it be the hardware? As I mentioned, I've only had it 6 days and never encountered problems like this with any other satellite boxes I've had. It's not a clone, I bought it from our esteemed sponsor.

What channels is it freezing on?

Do you have a local card with subscription in the box?

It's done a few other unusual things. It's crashed a few times, once when I looked at the trascoding plug in another when I checked cams. I just tried to flash it and it said it had on the front of the box but that hadnt when I check the box.

Yes, I even was using the supplied Sky+ HD box until last Wednesday with no issues.

Taking some of the earlier advice, I just decided to restore Helios 001 from image manager via the remote, to go back from scratch.

And now the whole box has crashed. The channel I was watching and 'please wait while restore prepares (48)' is frozen on screen and has been now for close to 10 minutes.

In that case id start with a fresh flash of build 010, not 001, available on http://www.openvix.co.uk/index.php?dir=Vu%2BSolo2/ or through the image manager.

That's what I've done and it's crashed. Totally frozen with message on screen ('please wait while restore prepares (48)'). What should I do?

Flash it again & don't restore?

coach
28-04-14, 22:10
Tonight, I have tried to flash it, didn't work. Restore, didn't work and crashed.

Going to turn it off and probably ring World of Satellite tomorrow. It's crashed and hasn't run smoothly since I got it.

It sounds like the backup you're restoring has issues.
Fresh flash build 010 & set-up from scratch.

coach

Should I factory restore?
Then flash image?

judge

No need, just fresh flash 010 of Helios.

So plug my usb in with the files on, turn box on and it will take care of it?

I have tried tonight and it wouldn't do it.

The first file I put on via ftp was mgcamd 138c file. I can't seem to either locate it or delete it via the remote. Could this be the root of the problem?

judge
28-04-14, 22:51
Yes, if you're restoring a settings back-up that has an issue with your mgcamd config file, you're also restoring that issue.
Either use blue button -> ViX -> Image Manager -> yellow button, download Helious 010.
Or get it from http://openvix.co.uk & extract it on a USB stick, then flash it that way.

SHould the box then restart? I just followed those instructions and nothing happened.

Tried again and on screen it says

ofgwrite Flashing tool

a couple of boxes and then reads, in red letters, error remounting root.

I downloaded the image, 010, via the remote. Nothing happened, so I tried again and the above happened
And now it's crashed again.

Another flakey plugin? no wonder you're having issues.

coach

I haven't added any plugins, only the ones that were preinstalled on my Vix built World of Sat box.

So as you can see, I can't flash the box or really do anything without it crashing.

I'm at a loss and thinking I've just bought a very expensive door stop/ paper weight.

That picture you uploaded isn't any part of a default ViX image as far as I'm aware.
I could be corrected here, so wait till someone else can confirm.

Dont worry about the ofgwrite screen, it is exactly what you should see if live flashing the receiver via the Image manager and certainly nothing to worry about.

I do however think you are trying to run before you walk and making things way too complicated for your self.

1. Download a fresh clean copy of Helios Build 010 from www.openvix.co.uk
2. Download the Solo2 flashing tutorial from www.openvix.co.uk
3. Prepare your USB stick as described in the tutorial (use the HP format tool to format the flash drive, link in the tutorial).
4. flash the image and setup from scratch, do not use any settings backups.

If the above still fails try a different Flash drive / USB stick.

Since moving to Zeus the process of flashing from within the box has been handled by this ofgwrite flashing tool by betacentauri, well it certainly has on my solo2 and duo2 it isn't a dodgy plugin it is now part of the kernel... Also on flashing my solo2 from Helios 006 to 008 the other night I too had the red unable to mount rootfs error, I had to download and flash from USB, but then updating from within the box with ofgwrite from 008 to 010 worked fine .

Ok, thanks. I will try all these. Hopefully it will work.

Maybe I am trying to run, but ideally I just want to sit and watch telly. Telly that doesn't freeze every ten minutes invoking an annoyed look from my wife followed by 'And how much did we pay for this satellite box again?'

I'm under pressure guys!!!

You mentioned that you had a few glitching F5 boxes as well - the only way to eliminate glitching is to get a legal subscription

I've been a paying Sky customer for over 20 years.

Had a skybox in my place in Spain. Easier to take a card in your luggage than a sky + HD box.

Have you reflashed the receiver from a usb stick without restoring settings yet? Also why are you using mgcamd if you have a local card - its a client only emu.

No, not had chance. Going to try that tomorrow. Been really busy at work since that advice. Want to make sure I have time to read all the instructions and do it properly.
