I know there is a documented list of wi-fi dongles for usb port on the vu receivers (and that's a fab list)
But I was wondering if there was a set list of USB / hard drives that work ?

We have this http://www.vuplus-support.co.uk/showthread.php?1798-Setting-up-your-external-USB-HDD-with-your-Solo-the-easy-way! great tutorial on getting a USB HD to work.

As a general rule will any usb stick + usb powered hard drive work .
As long as it has a linux based format on it (i.e. not FAT32) ?

Pleae have a look at these 2 threads

http://www.vuplus-support.co.uk/showthread.php?860-Please-post-your-working-brand-of-internal-SATA-HDD-and-size

http://www.vuplus-support.co.uk/showthread.php?555-Please-post-your-working-brand-of-USB-stick-used-to-flash-your-VU-Duo

Many USB drives work and a fraction if not any have been found to not work. the HDD is the same very few dont work.

FAT32 is fine with the DUO but has its limitations at times depending on the task needed for e.g. linus blocks FAT32 in 2GB bloks so anything with more would be best as ext3 but other wise a 3gb USB stick is fine to use and for flashign the duo then it needs to be FAT32 on the USB

Read the Threads i mentioned it will help you out alot

Although links were good in my choice of hard drive.
I did not see too much on which enclosures for Vu Solo , as I guess most Duo fans have internal or eSata connection.
So for anyone who cares :) I got this enclosure which plugs into the front usb port.

http://www.usbnow.co.uk/Hard_Drive_Enclosures-3.5%22_Hard_Drive_Cases/c10_25/p1878/2.5%22_&_3.5%22_Docking_Station_%28SATA%29/product_info.html

And this hard drive ' Samsung F3 HD103SJ 1TB ' .
Recordings look to be working so far after one hour of trying it out.

yeah sorry about that SilverFox
I got a bit over eager to report back.

People it really is as easy as others report. Plug in a usb enclosure and plug a recommended hard drive...and it's so far been pretty straight forward.
I've just downloaded 5 days of EPG onto hard drive in a few minutes.
I have even begun to love the colourful LED light - red, amber, green..even flashing green sometimes :-)
