View Full Version : Optimum Swap File Size

Just curious if there's an optimum size for a swap file? Running off an 8gb USB stick, I've set mine @ 512mb, but is that too much? Does larger files slow things down, noticing problems with certain plugins. Not sure if they're related

Thanks

If you set up the swap via the ViX- swap manager the swap file will be used only when it is really needed.
A large file will do no harm, so I would say: if you use swap, use as large as possible (i.e. what you've done).

Are you using Vix? Just curious as the largest swap I can create is 256Mb.

Yes, but everytime I've attempted to create one through the GUI it never worked so I created manually, I just took their figure and upped it to 512mb. It does work fine and shows as 512mb in the menu.

I'm just finding one of my plugins is struggling now and then, I can't name it.

Hmmm ... I do get oddities with this box, frustrating ones too! Any ideas of what I should be looking at?

I'm unsure why Vix is failing to setup a swap file for your box in the swap manager, also it is worth considering using the plugin cache flush.

The swap manager will only allow to create a swap file on a suitable device (i.e. it is in the Ext3/4 format).
Manually creating a swap file on a FAT32 device is possible, but it will give issues.

My memory stick is formatted to Ext4, I also use this for Picons and EGP. I bought it specifically to use as a faster source for Swap/EPG/Picons.

I haven't tried re-creating it from the gui, as each time I have to restore, the swap file is still present on the USB stick. I just re enable it.

I did have cache flush running but after a restore I found it didn't show in the list of plugins any longer, so had no option to configure it.

Save me opening another thread, just found a further release of OpenVix ... Zeus? What's that, the next released from 3.0?

Is it worth me going to Zeus? I spotted it's up to version 016 already, is it stable enough to use? Sorry ... haven't known about this and not sure whether it's worth updating to that version.

I would put your epg, on hdd if possible, personally found when kept on usb of my duo's in past it acted sluggish at times. Since moving to hdd much more responsive.

Vix Zeus is a newer version of the image, if you are planning on upgrading, you need to do a full reflash and can not do a settings restore.

Can't be. Nothing is been done with the files when E2 is alive.

Don't want to get into an argument with you. Just take it from me "it did".
In a perfect world, yes it shouldn't matter, but in my experience it made a noticeable difference.

And since placing it on hdd, it vastly improved.

Then something else must have coincided that change. A file that is not being used will not interfere with anything.

No, but if a file has not loaded correctly from a usb to flash or saved correctly when closing down, because of read and write speeds of a usb stick, can and will cause issues.

1- This will not happen because of lack of speed.
2- Nothing is ever being loaded from USB (or HDD) to flash.
3- But if a file is corrupt, it will lead to missing EPG-data, not to any other issue.

Logically, I thought the EPG being on USB would be more efficient as there's no spinning up required as with a HDD, but I agree the HDD is a faster option. I may just change to see what the effect will be.

I've upgraded to Zeus, liking it already, a certain plugin has improved figures on a particular setting, which I was having issues with. Hopefully I'll encounter less issues and be a happy camper :)

Nope, that is not the case. EPG data is only being read on E2 start and being written on E2 stop; in both cases the HDD is spinning.

you'r thinking there is flawed, at least where it comes to EPG, EPG data is held in live memory the same as your bouquets or channel lists, it is only read from or saved to the USB stick at boot up and shut down, the best place for the EPG is on a internal HDD if you have one.

I can't understand why you can't name the plugin. It might be a plugin the you don't want to name, like a porn one or something, but if you can name it it might speed things up.

***tube plugin :p

It's a plugin we're not allowed to discuss, well you can depending on the situation, but not wishing to break the rules, I don't want to name it (it begins with three c's).

I'll swap the EPG to the internal HDD and see if that helps, hopefully it'll make some speed improvements.

If you are talking about Cccam the software and it's uses you are allowed to talk about it, as it has relevant legal uses, obviously there are other uses regarding external card sharing which you are correct cannot be spoken about.
