is it possible to play xvid files on venton unibox hd1 - if so how?

If the codec used is supported: yes.
Playback is the same as playback of recordings: open the list, navigate to the file and click OK.

but is it supported? and if not is there a plugin or anything?

Try it your self but as rob says it depends on whether the codec used is supported by the manufacturer of the receiver in the kernel / drivers. If not there is nothing we can do about it and you cant manually add functionality for none supported media formats either.

I have tried it - plays black screen - no audio - just wondered there was a workaround ?

As I said: it depends on the codec used. xvid/divx itself doesn't say much.

Yes, there is a solution: transcode the file (using a program like 'handbrake', preferably with the H264 codec).

here's some more info on the codec 32473

Can anyone recommend an alternative box to upgrade the unibox HD1 to (maybe one that will play divx/xvid etc!)

As I said several times before: it depends on the codec used, not on the extension xvid or whatever. And the same applies to all containers.
And most, if not all, STB's have the same codec support.

i thought the extension was .avi and the codec was XVid ? I've always use standalone media players in the past and they play those files fine, was just hoping one of the linux based sat boxes would do the same

Hi,
you are right DivX/XVid are the codecs and both are a type of MPEG4 but there are some limitations. The boxes do not play all files especially GMC and QPEl are no goes. Old divx 3.x are normally also not played. Use the PC program MediaInfo to get more information about the file and post it here. Normally divx/xvid with the correct settings are played by the boxes.

ciao

Personally, I've never had any problems with playing any xvid/divx files... But I must just be lucky I suppose...

The image you posted above, goes to show the reason why it's not playing...

So lesson learned: a file is played back correctly or you transcode it using H264. This applies to all STB's.
