View Full Version : [CrossEPG-Config] Crossepg hangs on reading titles - help please

dude1

As title crossepg hangs when on reading titles at 195kb & after around ten minutes that disappears & it releases the box.

A few details. My box is a VU+ Solo2 running latest vix 775. I have had it around a month & have not a problem with crossepg until the last week. I've had it on auto update every morning a few minutes after an auto bouquet update has completed which saves to the usb stick. All was updating fine, last good update when I looked back was the 28.10 so I only noticed today when I had blank spaces that it hadn't worked since then.

I've so far tried the following without success.

Reflash 775 from usb stick & reinstall backup of my settings & plugins, manual crossepg update..
Download & restore 775 through box & reinstall of my settings & plugins, manual crossepg update.
Telnet into box, init 4 to standby box, ftp to delete epg.dat & crossepg folder from usb, init 3 to reboot box, manual crossepg update.
Change epg save location from /usb back to default /hdd, manual crossepg update.

They all give the same result where it hangs at the same point then takes a while to release box. Also it used to go to the blue openvix wallpaper with a radio station playing audio when doing a manual update but now it just stays on the current channel.

Hope somebody can offer some help as I've spent many hours today trying to sort it but cannot.

Thanks.

Hi dude

I think a few of us are having the same problem:

http://www.world-of-satellite.com/showthread.php?32855-updated-to-775-tonight-EPG-crashes-at-reading-titles-on-new-CROSSEPG

It seems a bit hit and miss whether the fixes mentioned work. I've just reflashed back to build 770 and all seems well (epg just completed a full update). I think just be patient and wait for andy and the team to sort this out as they inevitably will. Those boys are the dogs!

Thanks very much for the links above. I've managed to get a manual update to work now which was done back on the blue vix wallpaper screen with radio audio.

I downloaded the older image 774 then restored to that. Then reinstalled my settings & plugins. Then did the manual crossepg update.

Success. Hopefully the guys will find the problem with 775.

Thanks again for the quick replies

I had a similar issue; it was fixed by de-installing Cross and subsequent installing again..

Does that make it work on the 775 image?

Interesting thanks. I might wait until there's another image update before I retry it.

I was having this exact same issue myself as described above on my Duo2 with Vix Build 775 when downloading the OpenTV 28.2E EPG and tried unsuccessfully all the steps suggested to rectify it. I was using the XMLTV-Importer as a workaround with the Rytec UK XMLTV which worked fine although was not as accurate as the OpenTV download using CrossEPG.

However, I updated today to Vix Build 776 and CrossEPG downloaded the OpenTV 28.2E EPG successfully for me. The CrossEPG version info show as as version 7.01.

Thanks to all involved in fixing this in the new build.

I'm getting the same problem too on my ET9000. I did a clean install of 775 and the problem reared its ugly head. I've since updated to 778 and its still the same.

A couple of things I've noticed are that there's only 1 option for Sky 28.2 instead of the previous two, and when it downloads it doesn't change to the radio channel.

Both of those are features and intensional as part of the upgrade to CrossEPG.

Yes, there is no need to switch to radio channel now & 28.2 is all that's needed for Sky UK & IRE.
A few people have mentioned this now but not one debug log has been uploaded.
As none of the team can reproduce this, it's going to be impossible to find the issue without those logs...

No logs for this.

I managed to get the epg populated but it took nearly 20 minutes instead of the normal 1-2 minutes.

You can activate debuglogs at any time. If you have debuglogs de-activated, they will indeed not be produced.

The Lambton Worm

OK I'll check that tonight when I get in from work (I normally have it switched on). If it isn't on I'll give it a whirl and see what happens.

Rob van der Does

Don't forget to reboot the box once debuglogs have been activated (otherwise you still get no log).

The epg problem has been fixed by upgrading to 776 for most of the boxes but not for ET9200. I have a ET9200 and will to get a log of the failure. Does anyone know how to enable the log and the log location please?

I assume it's the one in /var/log/messages?

Thanks

Menu -> Setup -> System -> Logs -> Settings -> Enable debug log = yes.
Restart E2 & try to download the EPG.
The debug log will be in /home/root/logs/ by default.

Sorry not been back with more information on the epg but I ended up with another problem of the flash memory filling up that took me tonight to sort out see here (http://www.world-of-satellite.com/showthread.php?32820-crash-trying-to-download-plugins&p=248682#post248682)

I'll give the newer build a try as soon as I get chance as didn't know there was a 776 available now.

Thanks.

im staying away for now, with an old image until this is well and truely nailed, nothing wrong with old EPG method to be honest - taking up too much time

shouldnt u pull 775 until you get a better and more positive response.

So, it does work, but something in your setup is slowing it down.
How many feeds have you from the fixed 28.2 dish?
Can you enable those only & try again?

yes, correct.

i have 2 feeds from sky LNB, one goes to upstairs azbox (when r u going to support them!) and one to tuner b of xtrend. (only because blind scan doesnt work on tuner b which is no good if u have a motor setup)

i did only enable the one tuner on last log, that was with tuner b (sky) configured only.

When reporting any issue, it's taken that all relevant info will be given. Nobody can guess your configs.

b) i dont see why its THAT relevant

Tuner set-up & configs, not relevant when reporting issues? beyond me, sorry.

EXT400, TMTwin, TM2T, GBQuad, VU Solo2 all working fine.

I think the problem is with ET9200 then. My Technomate, duo2 and solo works great as well.

I just hope it can be fixed as not every box has this issue

yes im inclined to agree, theres vu+ people happy with it

its either my tuner setup (fixed on b) and motor on a - or something xtrend 9200 specific stuff going on.

as i said, happens on Xtrend Alliance also which also has crossepg 0.7

Looks like Xtrend stuff from all indication...I don't think it has to do with your setup

Yer cheers. Maybe not many people with same tuner configuration I guess if someone else can plug their 28.2e connection into tuner b and test that might help

I have two cables from 28.2 with one connected to tuner b and the other connected to tuner a and I still experience the same issue.

I'll make sure my crash logs are enabled tonight in case of further problems. Is there any personal information in them that should be deleted before posting them on the forum?

Thanks.

I've setup my 9200 to download Open-TV on Sky-UK & IT.
I have only tuner A enabled, with a fixed LNB for 28.2E and a motor for 13E.
The process is rather slow: reading titles and descriptions take a considerable amount of time. So I think this confirms your report.

The import started on 28.2E: that took some 8 minutes to complete.
The subsequent 13.E import took another 9 minutes.
The complete import & parsing process took around 18 minutes.

Once done I had no EPG data available on any UK and IT service.

So I can confirm that there is something not quite right.

I did.
But given the fact that you noticed the same behaviour using other images, and that my other boxes are fine in this respect, I doubt if we can do anything about it.
It looks like a driver related issue (as it is box-dependant), but I'm not sure what the role of the drivers is in this case.

I completely agree with you but considering the fact that other boxes experienced the same issue on 775, there might be a way forward....touch wood

Don't think so. Other boxes on the same settings and same dish works without any issue. And ET9200 was also working fine before the 775 image

It doesn't use the spare tuner but I am happy with it as it takes less than 2 minutes to complete as against the 0.7.1 that takes forever and never gets the epg populated. I will stay with this old version until the issue is resolved.

The latest version that tend to uses the spare tuner is of no use if you only have a single tuner box though as I found out on my TM single....it just freezes the channel when downloading epg data.

any update on this issue? clearly not an image issue, more of a crossepg 0.7 issue on xtrend 9200's - has it been passed to the crossepg devs?

yes but that does not solve the problem with whats going on with the ET receivers and the newer builds of CrossEPG as all you did was downgrade to a older version of CrossEPG.

As rob says it's beginning to look like this may be driver related for the Extrends which is why no one else can replicate it on any other boxes. For the record it works perfectly on all of my receivers in build 778 as it did in 775 with the boxes below.

Vu+ Solo2
Vu+ Uno
Vu+ Duo LE
Vu+ Ulitmo
TM-Nano-OE
TM-Twin-OE
TM-2T-OE

and no i dont have any Extrend receivers to check with.

Also while i'm here let me just reiterate what my colleagues have already said.

When submitting Bug reports and Debug logs it is vital that you give us as much data as possible about your setup, even if you think it's not important. There are so many variables to each individual setup that it is practically impossible for us to work towards replicating your bug reports, Threads like this one need have been less than two pages rather than the nine were in now and it would be a lot less stressful for all involved.

We really appreciate you taking the time to submit logs and bug reports but it has to be done properly to be of any real use to us.

Larry-G

yes, correct.

i have 2 feeds from sky LNB, one goes to upstairs azbox (when r u going to support them!).

There are no plans to offer ViX support for this receiver although i believe other OE-Alliance teams do.

There are no CrossEPG guys, CrossEPG has not been updated by it's author for a long long time, infact it has been abandoned all together. Andy is updating CrossEPG for the OE-Alliance him self and it's a ongoing work in progress but we need people to submit accurate and detailed reports when they find faults so that we can at least try to replicate and at best fix those issues.

To be honest, I have always found this package a pain, so I use XMLTV which has always worked for me without the need to recreate corrupted DB's every so often. :) ... and works perfectly on both ET boxes (ET9200/ET5000)

as has CrossEPG for me, I have it running on a Ultimo that has been in constant use since the day i got it and CrossEPG / OpenTV has never once failed me, believe me if it had i would have had it in the neck because this is the primary family receiver.

thats a matter of opinion - working in IT professionally, we apply lots of workarounds, when we have to wait for vendors to fix something. We apply group policy work arounds or registry changes on the affected pc's.

i simply meant, reinstalling an OLD version of CrossEPG is not fixing the issue, its working around it until the new method of CrossEPG obtaining the data using the spare tuner is fixed.

simples.

Indeed. And you can't, as old versions are not even available.

Thats the point Rob did not reinstall a OLD version of CrossEPG, he removed and then reinstalled the same version.

And before you ask: the feeds always hold the latest versions of all plugins, regardless of the image version you're using.

I updated to latest build and now crossepg doesn't hang on scheduled scan, it doesn't run at all now. But it works fine manually. Is it me or is this a known issue.

Thanks

it's working fine on my receivers both manually and on scheduled update. if possible could you create a log a scheduled EPG update and post that log here ?.

No problem phonoix, I posted the crash logs a few posts ago. How do I log the scheduled epg update, or will I just try a fresh flash.

Larry-G
10-11-13, 11:32
set a schedule for say 10:40 and make sure debugging is activated then reboot the receiver at say 10 35 and just wait for the schedule to kick in, the newest log generated will be the one to contain the EPG schedule.

Updated to 782 yesterday & manual update now working for me on Solo2. Crossepg was updated in the same update so no separate reinstall was needed for me.

Nice how it works on the channel your watching as well. Haven't tried auto update again yet though. Probably less need for it now as you can do it while your watching tv.

yes, the new one is clever using the spare tuner. BUT is it just me, or does anyones think it would be better if the the graphic wasnt so big and intrusive - it just needs an icon in the top right or something to show its working...i shouldnt grumble as its a great tool.

Maybe the graphic could be smaller, but if it was just "an icon in the top right" we would have users complaining about a random graphic appearing & not knowing what was going on...

Anyway, down to skin developers to see what suits.

The same as for every plugin:
1- Deinstall: Pluginbrowser --> red. Restart E2 when done.
2- Install: Pluginbrowser --> green. Restart E2 when done.

I've upgraded to 785 on my ET9000 and that works.

However, because it uses the free tuner I have another problem. My free tuner (A) is a motorised dish (tuner B fixed on 28e) and if its not on 28e when I update crossepg with OpenTV it moves to 28e. Because it takes time to move from one sat to another crossepg freezes on the first part of scanning channels. Even after tuner A has reached the correct position it doesn't correct itself. If tuner A is already on 28e when I start the download there's no problem what so ever with getting the epg data.

I'll post a log later on when I get home from work.

thanks adrian, i have added a little delay before trying to download the data from stream. let me know, but it should help with motor setup, will be in tonights build.

What about the ET9200? has the CrossEPG been fixed the latest update?

I had tried everything to make it work on image 776 without success.

I have run Cross on my 9200 on 786: once it goes fine, the other time it doesn't.
We are looking into this, but it seems to be rather random.

Could it be something to do with the EPG versions? I removed the 0.7.02 and installed 0.6.2 and epg download works fine. But not on the latest epg version even after replacing 0.6.2 with 0.7.02.

I had this issue. while setting up a box for a mate. I tried most of the above without success. re-flashing removing deleteing the plugin, etc, etc,

However, manually scanning 11778V SR-27500 FEC-2/3, manually, it's worked fine since!
This doesn't seem to be on the transponder list so you may have to do it manually if it's not on your satellites.xml. Maybe auto bouquets does not add "IEPG data 1" or "Epg background audio". channels to the list, maybe these are necessary for the EPG update.

maybe this is why it works for some and not others.

balls cannot update with an Edit.

I restored my settings, did the same again, the results are yes the EPG does update on EPG background audio, but if your elsewhere first it fails in the same way.

A work around would be to set it to set a zap to EPG background audio first.

It seem to work fine if i upgrade from 774 in the menu, if i restore my settings from then on 806 it breaks it and i can only update from "EPG background audio" again.

I'd love to be able to log what's happening on various builds but I haven't got time and it's not my box.

Which receiver?

Ragnarok

VU+ Duo . the online update worked and kept my working settings, clean flash of 802 couldn't get that to work by itself. without going to epg background audio.

if you restore your 774 or earlier settings you'll break it again, seems if you have the old open tv provider list with 2 sky uk's on there after 774 you definitely need to completely clean up cross epg and start from scratch.
