Is there any way to put this data on to USB rather than HDD, can't see any thing in settings.

There is not currently a way no, sorry. I wouldn't worry though, the epg.dat file is only accessed when you first boot or reboot to populate the epg cache, the HDD does not need to spin every time the epg is accessed, its purely to save when the receiver is rebooted etc.. to save re-downloading the epg data.
