Finally they are ready :D
GB have informed me that they now have the GBLAN adaptors.

Best bet now is to contact "Oeden Onur" at
onur@impex-sat.de to arrange delivery.
It might be helpful to quote your name/shipping address and serial number of you Quad.
They will be supplied free for owners of Quads with the serial numbers from YAD1208000001 to YAD1208001001 ;)

Will all future quads come with a free adaptor or is this for old machines only.
Or is the Quad now sold with built in gigabit...

Hi mate,

Mail them with that exact point - nothing to lose. Agree that limiting them to the first 1000 is very bad form. False advertising from the start.

They changed serial number at the same time they changed the packaging to say 10/100 mbps instead of gigabit.

However, I think Marty said they still advertise the Quad as having Gigabit on the web :smash:

Tell us why please? Apart from the exchangeable and number of tuners that is.
Because of the GB-lan? Or the transcoding options? Or the much bigger box? Or.....?

Stanman
03-08-13, 16:12
Having both boxes and used both of them in real world use, imho the solo2 is the better box.

Vtuners for it work out of the box and no flaffing around and to me at least, it seems to be faster to boot up.

Darrellr
03-08-13, 18:35
:) Any compliment of the Quad always leads to a Solo2 comparison.

I bought a Quad, it was the cheapest option that did what I wanted. My expectations were not high given my l-o-o-o--n-g association with this 'hobby'. I am genuinely impressed with what I bought, bearing in mind I did know about the GB lan issue prior to purchase.

What I would LIKE to see:

Transcoding to allow me to watch stuff whilst 'on the road'.
3D BD ISO playback (pre-decrypted)

dfdream
03-08-13, 19:07
Is vtuner not working on the QUAD..
I use this alot on my Duo and will need it on my DUO replacement...

Nope, my pctv290e worked as long as there was no recording. As soon as one kicked in black screen, which made the whole thing useless.

That is very true and I apologies for rambling.

I hope the wait for your adapter is worth it. Based on the fact identical such adapters retail for £15 and have been available for next day delivery for over a year, these Gigablue sourced ones are obviously very special and well worth the wait :-D

VIX doesn't seem to detect mine (pretty sure a driver issue)
On my PC it gets detected as a "LAN7500"
Here a screenshot of its performance (500mb test file)

27846

The little book that comes with shows it working on OpenMips.
I "think" we need "smsc7500.ko" ?

I have Linux stuff here (that I don't quite understand :p ) if someone wants a go at a driver?

I didn't try to install it yet, but i've seen in changelog of 715 version of the Vix image that it was mentioned the Gigablue Usb ethernet adapter...

Don't it work straight if I connect it? What must do to make it work?

Try 715 (I only just had time to update mine a few mins ago) if it doesn't work then simply telnet your quad this opkg install kernel-module-smsc75xx
Don't forget to reboot ;)

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I wasn't too happy with the results from Lan Speed Test Lite so I tried a "real life" situation and tried copying some files to and from the Quad to my PC.
Results were better than that reported by lan speed test :D

Upload (PC to Quad) was a good 20 MB/s (that's megabytes not megebits)
Download (Quad to PC) was a bit better again at 28ish MB/s sometimes peaking at 30MB/s

2784827849

So, write speed is nearly double fast Ethernet (100mbps) and read speed is nearly triple :)
As suspected far from gigabit :p but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick :p

Speeds are a bit higher on a PC, maybe things might improve in the future with better drivers?

You don't need to test anything or buy from exotic sellers. I bought two different adapters and published the result on this board months ago.

There are three common chipsets:

SMSC LAN7500 (USB2)
ASIX AX88178 (USB2)
ASIX AX88179 (USB3)

In general the read speeds are good for all at 30-33 mB/s (280 mbit/s), whereas only the ASIX88179 offered similarly consistently high write speeds. The LAN7500 chipset was about 20% slower when writing and got very hot in use.

These read speeds equate to ~ 3x the built-in port speed and about 40% of the speed of 'proper' gigabit.

Gigablue are giving away units based on SMSC LAN7500.

An equivalent LAN7500 device would be the Digitus Dn10150 device, an example of an AX88179 device would be the Digitus DN3023 device. I bought one of each of these for £15 each from amazon.

I hope that is comprehensive

Darrellr
09-08-13, 20:04
One rider I will add is that the latest VIX 715 build doesn't seem to work with the ASIX AX88179 driver plugin.

[Edit] Actually ignore the above. It is working fine :)
