Hi just wondering about the above , would it be better with an external drive (caddy,enclosure or usb) for heat issues or performance or does it not really matter.

Still looking to take the plunge on a new receiver ( Venton or TM i think:confused:) and wondered about this aspect as it will be housed in an enclosed cabinet but has fans circulating the air, so you wouldn't see the drive if it was recommended to have it external to the receiver

An internal HDD is always the better option. Don't worry about heat: just make sure you use a dedicated PVR-HDD (running at 5400 or 5700RPM) or use a laptop drive.
