I can't get this to get past the loading screen. It was OK until this morning. I was preparing to upgrade from vix2.4 to 3.0. I was going through the menus noting down all the settings to make life easier after the major change. While I was doing this I inadvertently went into a menu option that attempted to update feeds. After a long time this appears to have failed and the info box would not go away whatever buttons were pressed.

I decided to switch off, after restart it would not get past loading screen. I had got most of the information needed so I decided to flash the new system. As a precaution I installed the latest bootloader, and then the latest stable version of Vix 3.0.339. After finishing, I rebooted and got the new splash screen with rotating VIX. This is a far as it went.

Using a terminal I had a look at the messages log. It had crashed.

I have now tried reverting back to previous Vix2.4, the latest Beta: 3.0.685 and the official VU+. All with same result.

Full messages log attached.

I will be away for a while, so I won't be able to post any responses until next week. I will be monitoring my emails while I am away.

Grateful for ideas as to how to get this going again.

completely power off flash again.
wait until the display says finished (or something to that effect)/
Leave for 1 minute
power off
leave for 30 seconds
power on.

do you have a genuine box?

Mr. Mister

I think you might need the bootloader..

you have posted in the Duo section of the forum.. so i presume its the Duo you have..

You can get it DUO bootloader ...HERE.../ (http://openvix.co.uk/index.php?dir=Bootloaders/Vu%2BDuo/)

Just flash the bootloader the same way that you would flash an image.. It only takes a few seconds..

Then flash the image again..

Thanks to both of you for your prompt replies. I have just gone through the complete reload again using freshly downloaded files just in case there was any corruption.

Unfortunately exactly the same result. I suspect there must be an underlying problem that is independent of the software load. Obviously the Linux OS is still operational as without it I could not log in and interrogate it.

Yes, it is a genuine Duo, bought from WoS a couple of years ago.

Can I do anything to it from the terminal?

Mr. Mister
02-07-13, 20:59
did you try the bootloader.. ?

psitech
02-07-13, 21:03
Yes I did replace the bootloader as well, using the link you gave me for the fresh download, just in case I had got the wrong one previously. They did look identical files with the unzipped files being the same date/time and size as the ones I used before.

Mr. Mister
02-07-13, 21:11
OK.. I would try and flash the official image now..

After you flash it.. Allow box to fully boot.. you could even go through the FIW if you wanted to..

Then reflash again with Vix.. And see how that goes..

I have tried the official image again. Same result as before and same error in messages file as with other images.

Just in case, I have reformatted my usb stick and error checked it, all OK. It is the same stick I have always used in the past successfully for loading the VU+Duo. Wanted to make sure that it was not involved with the problem.

Gave it one more try, still just the same.

Mr. Mister

Can you upload the crash logs please.. ??

Mr. Mister

Sorry.. you already did that..

Im sure AndyBlac will have a look when he gets a chance..

The only log available is the /var/log/messages. This is attached to the original post. All the tries have the same error including the memory addresses.

If you go to :

Menu > Set Up > System > Logs > Settings :

You will see where your logs location are stored..

default i think is home/root

As the system does not get as far as allowing access to menus, I can't confirm this. The winter scene splash is as far as it goes with wide rotating VIX, followed by narrow rotating VIX is all that appears on video monitor. No buttons work at this stage. Only access available is by terminal. home/root is empty.

Would you have changed the path? I have on many occasions changed paths for settings/images to hdd or USB.

I remember not being able to flash an image about 8 months ago. I disconnected everything - USB (for picons, PTS) connectors, etc - only things connected were power cable and USB (flashable)

As the images had been fresh loaded and no access to loaded system the defaults would be in force. No settings carry over from loads and the hdd has not been touched.

I removed the picons usb before starting and the only other ports in use are the network and the satellite cables.

All powered off now until weekend.

If you can telnet in, then send the init 4 command, then your enigma2, and this will output everything it is trying to do on the telnet window...

Hi all,

Back home for a bit. Hope to get it sorted before I go away again so I can record stuff.

I have tried the init 4 and enigma2 commands from telnet session. Result is attached. Hope someone can interpret what is going on. The last command stopped where the file ends, no return to command prompt.

Hi mate

When you re flashed the receiver and powered down to remove the usb then powered up you get the splash vix image screen does it get to the point of setup or remain with a spinning vix icon.
Noted you committed the sin of switching off the receiver when updating which may have harmed the stb kernal but normally a full reboot would over write the error are you sure the original files you was using were for the right model of receiver?

After flashing and seeing the "remove usb and reboot" message I powered up and it got as far as the splash screen only. Occasionally I have seen the "Loading" message on the monitor screen. I always get the spinning VIX icon which changes from large to small.

The updating would never had completed because a change of network systems meant it would not have got anything. I downloaded the VU+Duo files from the forum these were:
duo_cfe_3_0_usb.zip
openvix-3.0.339-vuduo_usb.zip
openvix-3.0.685-vuduo_usb.zip

The older files were ones from the archive which were those I had used previously, eg the vu+ Official image and the last used image ViX-2.3.204-vuduo_usb.zip

I get the same error for all images so I suspect the problem is something other than the image load, it might have been the boot-loader but I re-flashed that with the one recommended in this thread.

Many thanks to all who are assisting, however nothing has changed the original problem yet.

I'm starting to think fried box...

Looking at your messages log, it's having errors with paging:

Whereas my ultimo has no problem with this (although could just be a red-herring)...

But, I would say memory problems/cpu problem...

Looking around, a few people said they had problems with kernel paging requests, and cleaning out the system resolved it. So, if you have some compressed air, might be worth opening the box, and blowing the box out...

psitech

I fear you may be correct, that there is a fault with the box. No compressed air but opened the box and it all looks very clean inside. No sign of conventional memory chips so I guess the memory is on the CPU chip or soldered on the board.

Anyone know of a memory test facility for the VU+ ? I could not see anything obvious in the *bin directories. Possibly a loadable via USB option maybe?

Is there a repair or upgrade option available?

I have finally found the cause of this problem. The box starts up OK if the HDMI cable is not attached!

It was working in the same setup before this happened, but now always crashes if the cable is connected at initial boot. I am using a computer monitor which works fine when connected to a computer via HDMI using the same cable.

I start it up and watch the progress using telnet and tail the /var/log/messages file. When it get to a stable point I connect the HDMI cable and it continues to work without problems. I now have to remember to remove the cable before restarting!

Hope this may help in case anyone else has a similar issue.

Could it be HDMI CEC setting linked to the tv? Strange that it works to PC and not TV.

Help please
I have openvix installed on solo2 but the box load's up (booting to 99 then I get the following error message 'service unavaiable check tuner configuration then it restarts itself

any help/advice?
I have tried to flash it but it won't read the USB pens (have tried ports at front and back and even both together but nothing still

Larry-G

That message sounds like the tuner is not setup correctly but that should not cause the receiver to reboot.
