Ok, so the mrs is sat watching Emmerdale that she recorded weeks ago, from the hdd on my Duo, out of nowhere up pops the message 'I see you' on the screen and on the front panel display of the Duo, after 15 secs its gone.

What the hell was that??

some one likely logged into your receiver and sent the message via the OpenWebIF.

no idea mate but if you go to the OpenWebIF you will see under box control "send a message" this is how you can do exactly what you describe in your original post. try it and see.

telnet into the receiver and once logged in use the passwd command ( exact spelling not password ), this will trigger the password reset protocol. Type your new pasword then hit enter and do the same again.

Thats it.

bear in mind that this password wont have any bearing on the OpenWebIF if you dont enable authentication for the OpenWebIF.

Ive changed the pw with putty, cant find the authentication bit in openwebif though

will do, scary!

would this mean that things on my box could be compromised? ie my cccam.cfg file?

Stanman

better check your cccam.cfg , names written in your *.cfg may be the same but they can point at some other IP ...

But there's more to it than changing a password: if someone from the outside world has been able to enter your box, uou must have enabled portforwarding. And now you know what that does .......

It really shows that we should all take time to set up each device securely. I left my router at default for too long and the aidra virus affected one of my boxes. Do not like the idea of people accessing my Sat box, PC etc.

Is there a sticky on setting up correct security for our receivers?

I would be more worried about the fact someone can get onto my network

That indeed is the problem.
And once being there using your identity (and hence your bank-accounts) is a piece of cake!
