is it possible to run certain programs from usb?

Im not sure if its possible to discus this here and I apologise if its not, but purely hypothetically is it possible to run cams and keys etc from a usb stick, so when the usb stick were removed so were the cams and keys or would this conflict with the way Linux operates.
