View Full Version : Write error disc full on fat32 usb hdd

Ive got a 1tb wd usb hdd split into 3 partitions, plugged it in and mounted the fat32 300gb partition. All seemed ok apart from i noticed i couldnt use permanent timeshift option and I got the drive is not an ext2,3 or 4 error. And while recording after about an hour had a disc full error even though i had loads of room left, so figured out it was probably to do with the fat32 4g file limit. Just wondering if i can format the fat32 partition to ext2, 3 or 4, which ext number i should use and any guides out there for doing this in windows

you could use Gparted or parted magic ( both available on this site ) to format one of the partitions to ext3 or ext4.

Ive got paragon partition manager so going to try with that, should i go with ext3 or ext4 do you think?

Larry-G

either should be fine although i would personally go wit EXT4 as it's the newer format.

getting "creating Hard-link to Timeshift file failed! The Filesystem on your Timeshift -Device does not support hardlinks. Make sure it is formatted in Ext2 or Ext3!. but permanent timeshift then seems to work, getting glitching now though, thinking this was maybe a bad idea,
is it possible to put an internal drive in as 4gb simply isnt enough for some longer tv shows

jez

edit: can live without the permanent timeshift even though its weird that after the error it seems to work, (maybe its a time sensitive error)as just recorded over 5.5gb with no problems, sorted

Having the same issues mate, can you try and watch the programme you have just recorded and tell me if you can watch without errors cos mine just keeps getting error and rebooting after 5 seconds of play

jez
28-04-13, 21:11
just watched about 5mins of it and seems fine, i originally had 3 partitions on the usb hdd i got rid of the fat32 one and formatted a 530gb linux ext3 partition, it still shows as ext4 in the mount manager for some reason but working fine so far

Ok mate, thanks for letting me know the issue must run deeper for me, I'm using internal hdd

jez
28-04-13, 21:21
would have preferred an internal hdd, let me know if you sort it out m8 please as I couldn't find anything about how to fit one in the xp1000 when looking

I get the time shift error as above everytime i change channel, is this the same for you jez or are you all sorted now?

jez

yeh i turned permanent Timeshift off as the error was getting on my nerves and it crashed a few times, but recording seems fine now so i figured i could live without the timeshift.

Ok mate, did this error happen due to you updating the latest vix? Let's hope andy blac can fix this.

jez

Permanent timeshift wont enable in fat32, so was the first time i tried recording over 4gb which prompted me to look at formatting the drive to linux, but i did click on software update yesterday which took me to build 652

timeshift should be setup to use an ext3 or ext4 device.

jez
28-04-13, 21:56
@judge what do you mean, I have formatted to Ext3 and Ext4 and still get "creating Hard-link to Timeshift file failed! The Filesystem on your Timeshift -Device does not support hardlinks. Make sure it is formatted in Ext2 or Ext3!" on external usb hdd

what does the drive show up as in mount manager? and how did you format it?

jez
28-04-13, 22:11
formatted with paragon partition manager 12, and it shows up as an ext4 drive in mount manager

I'd try formatting it on the box.

Catch 22.

Through STB you can only format in ext 4. Doing so gives you the hard link error.

I posted a question a few weeks back. After no response I had to format in a dm800.

I've formatted a good few drives in different boxes & never had this hard link error.

I posted this thread on 30/3/2013. I did not have the issue with the hardlink error before. I think the change in the image has permanently created the SDC mountpoint on my receiver even though nothing is connected to it. (TM Twin)

Are you currently using an ext4 USB drive? If not, would you mind testing please?

judge

using an internal HDD in the twin & no issues formatting it in the box.
the Operation not permitted error might because the drive was already in use, have a look in mount manager & unmount it before formatting if needs be.

The issue relates to USB disks, not internal drives. My HDD is fine.

The issue arouse after upgarding the image. Prior to this, it was fine.

sorry, don't have external usb hdd here to test at the moment.
just tried with a 32GB usb stick & it formatted fine.
i'm not the biggest fan of the twin but I doubt that's the issue, have you another vix supported box you can try on?

judge
28-04-13, 23:42
should also add 'at the moment' to the above 'i'm not the biggest fan of the twin' as it's a cracking box when it works right, just let down by current drivers.

Formatting is fine. It is afterwards when you want to use it for timeshift etc that you get the problem as mentioned in post 5

I have a TM Single, I shall try tomorrow.

back on topic, ive tried using an external usb hdd formatted to ext3 and ext4 and i get the timeshift error on both of them with permanent timeshift option set to yes

judge

is the drive always active? how's it powered?

jez
29-04-13, 00:04
yes its got its own power supply

judge

so, have you tried formatting it on the box?
also, what have you set in hard disk setup -> hard disk stand by after? might be worth trying changing those values.

(both in telnet)?

jez

I can record over 4gb now just get the timeshift error if permanent timeshift option is set to yes.
This is the telnet output

How did you change it jez

jez
29-04-13, 23:21
menu/setup/system/Timeshift Settings/timeshift location then with the channel up button on remote select the parent directory above the bookmarks and save it to timeshift folder in the hdd or usb mate

duoduo
30-04-13, 06:59
I followed your instructions jez and it says the same as what was already there. I thought you said yours now said /media/hdd/timeshift? Mine still says /hdd/timeshift?

Thanks for your help mate

jez
30-04-13, 15:54
First of all my usb hdd is now formatted in linux ext3 not fat32 anymore and mine does say media/hdd/timeshift. If I change the parent directory to internal flash it would say hdd/timeshift. Goto Timeshift settings/Timeshift location press ok then press channel up on remote so "parent directory" folder is highlighted, press ok and you should see "list of storage devices" folder, highlight that and press ok and on mine it shows "ext hdd" and "internal flash" highlight "ext hdd" and press ok then highlight timeshift folder and save it. Thats what worked for me anyway m8

..... my usb hdd is now formatted in linux ext3 .......
How did you do that? If the box formats the HDD, it will be in Ext4.
And it is advised to let the box format the drive.

jez
30-04-13, 16:49
did it with paragon partition manager 12, it shows up as ext4 for some reason though lol

jez
30-04-13, 17:13
by the way i was just doing an image backup and it failed so i deleted the backup and box crashed and stuck on boot loop, sigh it was going so well lol, so maybe i should have made the backup to a fat32 usb and not the linux usb one. I am reflashing now and setting it back up, i wondering if because i had permanent timeshift on and was doing a backup it might have been too much for the usb hdd to handle, ah well ya live and learn hopefully ill have it backup and running soon

Rob van der Does

By the box, yes, but it will still be Ext3. Anyway: better have the drive re-initialised by the box, as Ext4 is better and the settings will be specifically for large files.

I've got a 400gb partition for a nintendo wii on the usb hdd and want to keep it if possible, noticed if i initialise it on the box its going to wipe the whole thing, is there anyway i can keep the partition by using the box to format it?

Rob van der Does
01-05-13, 09:48
As far as I know the box should be able to format only the desired partition.
The dialogue window will show you the details, so be sure to read that carefully before initialising.

jez
01-05-13, 09:54
it shows the full capacity (1000.201 gb) of the hdd when i click initialise, think ill have to format on the pc to keep it split into 2

edit:
formatted it to ext4 on paragon partition manager and all working well again, just wont backup the image while in timeshift this time lol
