if you telnet in as root, you should be able to remove it.
rm -rf /PATH_TO/DIRECTORY_NAME

Was a plugin called icefilms, it installed incorrectly so i reinstalled but it left the old one there as a blank directory. When i ftp into box the directory is still there but it has a question mark in the folder.

I have just used command to successfully remove another plugin

any message in telnet telling you why it can't be removed?
maybe it's an orphaned symlink, should still be able to remove it though...
anyway, i'm sure it's not doing any harm if it's empty.

No message but directory remains in extension folder:/usr/lib/enigma2/python/Plugins/Extensions/Icefilms

Now when i press plugin i get error message saying Icefilm cannot be found

fresh flash is never a last resort, a bit like a good old spring cleaning...
if you know what you want backed up & restorded, should take no longer than 5 minutes...

back-up images also restore old bad back-up issues...
best to start from scratch every now & again.

I could not agree more, I think it's very good practice to get into the habit of performing a fresh flash once every few weeks at least, if for no other reason than to keep things fresh in your mind. once you have the hang of it you can easily be back up and running in less than 10 minutes from start to finish.
