you can change the password or set one via a telnet session with the passwd command.

look here for instructions to activate the telnet client in windows vista / 7 upwards

Just out of interest, how do you know if you've been hacked?? What are the signs, that I should be looking for?

Its not advisable to open ports 21, 23 & 80 i see this far too often

Personally, the way I do do it, is just port forward ftp, telnet and the web interface to none standard ports ~ the best thing about port forwards is they show as filtered ports, so anyone who scans it will NOT see the forwarded ports, so everything looks CLOSED :)

so it looks like

ftp 21 Inside Mapped to 3691 outside
telnet 23 Inside Mapped to 4692 outside
http 80 Inside Mapped to 5693 outside

SO to browse the box via webif you would go IP.IP.IP.IP:5693 and it will still work etc etc

Also change your root password with using telnet
"passwd" > it will ask for password > type your password and enter > it will ask you to enter the password again – enter it again > it will say password changed > Test it with FTP programme.

I would recommend you also enable http Authentication!
long blue press> scroll to Open Webif ok> enable http Authentication yes> Green to save.
Hope that makes sense
