View Full Version : Internal hard drive
Hi,
Sorry if this is a daft question but can any 2.5'' SATA drive be fitted to the solo2?
And also im after a 500GB drive if anyone can recommend one?
Thanks.

I have a Gigablue quad which also uses a 2.5. I bought a 1tb off-the-shelf Seagate portable HDD and removed it from its housing - works perfectly. Only consideration for the quad was actual size of the hard drive as there is limited space due to a locking fitting. I also used an-off the-shelf Buffalo 3.5 on my Duo with no issues.
Just don't get a 7200 rpm - it's overkill. 5400 rpm is ideal for video recording/playback.

Yes pretty much any 2.5" drive should work, im using a selection of drives I ripped out of my old laptops and they all work.

Hi i have fitted in my box a 1.5TB western Digital Green drive. Only word of warning is my friend who fitted it said it was very tight and had to bend a resistor slightly....

Most drives will work.
Stick to 5400rpm drives to reduce vibration and noise.
Stick to 9.5mm drives to allow max clearance for heat......
I just bought a Samsung spintpoint HN-M101MBB 1TB which I will be using to replace my existing smaller drive today. I went for the 1TB because it is only marginally more expensive than the 500GB models
Is it easy to fit the hard drive, the Samsung spintpoint HN-M101MBB is £54 so a saving from buying a solo2 already fitted

Very easy.

Will the solo2 only take a 2.5" drive or will it also take a full size HD ?
2.5" only internally. You could connect an external drive of any form factor.

OK Thanks Tkr001
I am going to buy my solo2 on Tuesday
I have a old laptop hard drive, which I am thinking about using to save a little cash for now.
I am not clued up on speed and wether this will be fast enough, or big enough only being 320gb
its a western digital,WD3200BEVT-75ZCT2
It says
interface SATA
Capacity 320gb
RPM 5400
Firmware T2
does any one know what if anything can be achieved with this.
When I am out I shall set it to record to HD channels at times
Thanks
Dan
yes that should do what you need it to do, although it may fill up a little fast if your archiving recordings rather than deleting them once viewed.
Thats a bummer, I only want to set it up once, so once you are transcoding and storing a bit on the solo 2. Will i need a 1TB hard drive then?
i use a 200 gig HDD on mine and it's perfectly fine for my needs as i tend to delete content once i have viewed it, or transfer it to one of my other boxes that has a larger HDD. really depends on what exactly you want to do with it.
I had a 1TB in mine and most of the recordings were HD and depending on the channels it can fill up quite quickly.
If you want to set up and forget, I would go for something a bit bigger than 320GB.
You can probably sell the 320Gb and use that towards the 1TB

Is it easy to format with a mac, on the Alien2 I sold to upgrade, this box formatted the hard drive easily
Very easy, the box can do it.
Hopefully I will be ordering my solo2 mid next week, but I have a sata drive that I want to install into it what is the best way to format drive for use in the solo2 :D
Will have the Black Hole on it as that is the one I prefere.
Needs to be a 2.5 HDD and box will do it - at least in vix
I have just thought, this will replace my Amstrad-DRX890
So I shall open it up and see what hard drive is in there first

Don't open it. It has a 3.5 sata drive.
No reason you could not use a USB enclosure and use it that way but its a bitch to open up, literally have to take the box apart:(

There is a tutorial on skycopy+ for disassembly.

the 320gb drive sucks. I need a 1TB one.
With this hard drive it reads as having 2 x 500gb partitions, is that right, dos it record to both to give the 1 TB easily?

Has anyone tried fitting a Solid State Drive yet? i can get a 500gb one for a decent price and if it works there are no moving parts and obviously no noise !

An SSD has no obvious advantages for an STB.
If your present drive is making noise, something is wrong.

Rob... I haven't even got my box yet, (awaiting delivery today) :) never mind a drive.... I was only asking because i have access to a 'cheap' SSD. I build and repair computers and laptops so am well aware of what noises HD's should and shouldn't make. If there are no advantages then i will just go for a cheaper 1TB 5400 drive as i can get them even cheaper. :)
Thanks. ;)

From all my boxes I can't really hear the HDD. They are either 2.5" or dedicated PVR 3.5" (5400 RPM) drives.
And SSD in an STB can even suffer from extensive wear (as there is no functionality like TRIM).
Anyone found a great deal on a 1tb drive?
I have seen 2 different instals on the net, 1 which is the hard drive within the frame, and the other where it is on top of the frame
which is right?
thanks
My own is mounted above the HDD cradle, allowing greater airflow around the HDD.

And mine is under the cradle, allowing the air to circulate the HDD perfectly....
Can I FTP a file (mp4/avi) to the internal HDD on solo2. And then play back through the the solo2
If so would i create a folder for these to be stored in to await playback
thanks

you can also set up a share from your pc to the solo2 so you can just select the relevant file you want to play via the remote without having to ftp, there are plenty of guides and info on setting this up on here.

i find my home network is so slow to share or steam.
and to ftp is slow too when its like a 2gb file
can you connect mac-solo2 via lan cable ?
or is there a faster way?
Sata II or Sata III ?
That is the question. I would like to know if I will see much benefit from the faster speed.
Rob van der Does
11-01-14, 20:37
Nope, you won't.
Sorry, I meant to say *any* benefit. At twice the read speed, perhaps populating the list of recorded files would be quicker for example? I've never seen either so only speculating but can't help but wonder why VU+ made the solo2 to support sata III.

Because sata III is a new selling point for HDDs, doesn't mean any E2 box can read/write to it any faster.

The (lack of) speed of any (e)SATA-HDD is not a limiting factor at all.
Without wanting to hijack the thread - has anyone squeezed a 3.5inch hard drive into one of these yet?
Didn't think there was room. Got loads of 3.5s knocking about, will try,

I meant with the shoe horning a 3.5 drive into it. I've cracked open a portable 2.5" hard drive now and about to install that. but had a few 3.5 drives knocking around that would have been preferable to use
I didn't even get round to opening it. At a guess , Even if it could squeeze in it would probable overheat.

Its true that hard drives do contribute to the heat of the box but just turn the fan up a little to compensate if you notice the box getting a little to warm..Anything below 35c is good.

There is a thread on another forum, involves making own bracket and connecting to a 12v power source.
i am expecting Delivery of my solo2 today so i thought that i would set up and format my old 200gig HHD to fat 32 so i have a nice clean drive
i have been using this drive on my Blade Combo for over 2 years without any problem,so i connected it to my PC and went to format it but to my surprise
i do not get a fat32 option for format i only get NTFS or exFAT  what is going on i checked my C Drive and i get 3 options as i expected FAT32 NTFS and also exFAT
i have deleted the drive thinking that i would get the 3 options back but still only exFAT or NTFS so would exFAT work with the solo2
i am only using this drive untill i can get a 1TB internal drive but i am short of funds at the moment with buying the solo2
and i know that you can not use time shift without a HHD and this is one function that i can not live without as i use it quite a lot so that i can fast forward the adverts
regards norm
Make it easy and use MiniTool partition wizard to completely remove the partition then set up a new one as fat32
Thank you Maxwell for your speedy reply i used to use partition magic 8 but it will not work with windows 7 :( i will do a search for it
regards norm
Maxwell you are a star Thank you very much the program was a breeze to use and formatted the 2.5 to fat 32 strait away
it even recovered a Maxtor 500gb that i took out of a Tivo box but could never get windows to recognize it,i was going to throw it in the bin Today
i put the Maxtor in to an external caddy and the program did not recognize it i rebooted windows and windows did not show it
but MiniTool partition wizard recognized it after the reboot and i was able to recover it and format it to FAT32
:D so now Thanks to you i have a drive that i can put inside of my solo2 and an external drive to use with it as well thank you again :beer_toast: :)

Hi, if you install an internal hdd after it's been flashed do you have to have it reflashed again afterwards in order to make recording/timeshifting work as it should? or are you able to go into some settings and mount it without reflashing? i have a solo2 with openvix/blackhole version no. 808.
Any advice on if this would be greatly appreciated. i bought the solo2 flashed without hdd, want one in and don't want to have to send it back to the supplier/flasher
regards
richard
no need to reflash just mount HDD.Flashing is also easy with USB stick.Just follow manual from this site.Takes only a few minutes.
Hi, thanks, does the box automatically detect the hdd and save all recordings/timeshifts etc to it then without the need for changing any settings whatsoever? how would you add the directories for recordings (eg media/hdd/movie) and deleted items etc? or is all that done automatically again?
richard
I run on VIX and there it is done automatically.Think most images do that.
Not a bad price here for internal 1TB hard drive
