View Full Version : Deinterlacing problems?

I've noticed since day 1 that the box is struggling to deinterlace or isn't deinterlacing the picture sometimes. It's most noticeable on channels with a news ticker at the bottom like Sky News and it seems to happen when the bitrate of the broadcast is high.

I'm using Vix image 3.0.569 and the display settings are 720p, multi (for Hz setting) and just scale, same as my Dreambox 800SE which never had this problem. Channels also change slower than my 800SE but that could be due to me using MGCam 1.38 on the Solo2.

Why is the box doing this? Is it a known problem with the box?

I'll post a picture example soon.

It really is hard to tell problems with screenies, while they are appreciated, sometimes the screenies work much better in the screenshot than the issue displayed on the TV.

The best way I can describe the problem to others then is to tell you to stream a channel with a news ticker like Sky News / CNN etc with VideoLAN through OpenWebIf and watch the channel with de-interlacing on and off. The picture on my Solo2 box on my plasma TV intermittently (probably when the image has a high bit-rate only) looks like a VideoLAN stream with deinterlacing off, then on, then off over and over and it's random.

I know it's the box because I don't get the problem when streaming.

Try using 1080i and see how that goes.

It's not made a difference, also tried 1080p. This problem is really making me :(

I thought the Solo2 would be better than my Dreambox but this picture problem is really putting me off.

Any more suggestions on what I can do to fix this?

Here is a good example video of what I see.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO6hjKxHWLk#t=22s

It looks like the picture slows down to half speed in terms of smoothnes, not speed (60fps vs 30fps) when deinterlacing isn't working on the box and it's easily seen in news tickers as they usualy scroll very smoothly.

I can only say that I can't replicate the problem.
Is it on all channels (I mean is it input resolution independent)? So e.g. BBC HD/BBC1/DasErste-HD etc?
If not, you could try using the AutoResolution plugin to match the input and output.

Hi,
if 1080i also shows this problem then your TV has the same problem as the TV is responsible for deinterlacing then. I also noticed a problem with news ticker when in 1080p. I did not notice a slow down.

Had this myself had to switch to blackhole

LOL, nice one: they use the very same drivers as all images........

It's on all channels in all resolutions. I notice it more when there is a news ticker at the bottom.

The TV isn't the problem because my Dreambox 800SE displays in 720p and 1080i just fine, no problems with news tickers or deinterlacing. I have only started to have this problem with the Vu Solo 2 since the very first day of using it. The news tickers don't slow down for me either, they just don't scroll as smoothly with the problem.

I also posted this problem on another forum and there are other people who say they have the same problem, even with the latest Blackhole image on Solo 2.

There have been many sets of drivers released for this box lately, its likely the drivers that came wirh the 12.12.12 image were fine and more recent drivers have introduced this problem. ( I am of course speculating as I dont have a solo2 ).

'Even' meaning what?

Meaning the problem exists on both Vix and Blackhole images for the Solo 2.

OK, clear, then we use different vocabularies.

Ok, so as I mentioned earlier, I posted my problem on another forum, the BlackHole forum:
http://www.vuplus-community.net/board/threads/deinterlacing-problem.10859/

The problem seems to be fixed with new drivers for people using BlackHole image on the Solo 2 (read the link I posted) but I am still having the same problem so it seems to be a Vix issue and the drivers not updating maybe because I installed the latest 2013-02-07 drivers yet the Information box on Vix still shows the driver version as 2013-01-25. I uploaded the driver files to /lib/modules/3.3.6-1.2/extra/ and fully reboot the box.

I hope someone can help me fix this problem because I want to continue using Vix as it is the best image out there.

Driver version will show old details, even though you are using the updated drivers, until the VIX team includes the drivers in an image update. I believe it i only a few days away.

First of all, as has been mentioned many times already on this forum: no image has any influence on the picture quality, only drivers do. And all images use the same.
Secondly, also mentioned several times and also in the posting above mine: manually placed drivers will never be reflected in the about-screen. But as you replaced the drivers yourself and rebooted the box, you know for sure you're using them.
