From build 546 upwards Mediascanner has been fixed to recognize media files via hot-plugged USB sticks and other devices as can be seen via the links below.
Please give this a go when the update is pushed and let us know how it works for you.

updated and fixed media scanner to now detect video files on USB devices, when hotplugging

To properly integrate these changes into the image it is recommended that you perform a reflash rather than a online image update.
