View Full Version : gz_open: fork: Cannot allocate memory - when installing ipk's

Hi, when trying to install any ipk files i get "gz_open: fork: Cannot allocate memory" this happens from VIX downloads panel too. Just tried picons for 28.2 and this happened.

Could this be caused by a full drive? I am not sure how to check ? Before I installed the USB-HDD I downloaded EPG data to the flash memory. Could that have killed it? Since then I pointed it to the HDD.

Thanks
Dave

If anybody else gets this issue, go to system, vix, swap manager and create a swap file. Fixed it :)

You shouldn't really need to though, are you installing lots of plugins?
It's a box that does lack in memory but should work perfectly on default installs.

all i have extra is cccam, not sure what else to do :-\

I have cccam on both my solos & no need for a swap file, if anything it's EPG downloads that might require one, but haven't had to use one in the last 6 months I'd guess.

i kow this is in the solo section, but, on my duo, i had a 512Mb swap file setup on class 10 16Gb usb, and for some reason, roughly every 10-14 days, because of the epg, which was set to get stored seperatley on usb, the receiver would completley lock up and fail, untill i hard rebooted, and would then also have to remount my hdd and usb (the swap file would load with no problems from the usb though)

not an issue, as a simple reboot etc fixed it, but, i knew when it happened, as the vfd of the receiver would be stuck on 'DVB Service' in the morning, where it had failed to complete the epg download overnight

i only downloaded the epg and its set to HDD,, just 1 EPG too

Ive only had my Solo since yesterday :-\ i reflashed today to see if it would fix but it failed to download the picons after epg and cccam 2.3.0 where installed I might try an older CCcam, any suggestions on whioch version ?

Picons are best installed manually, waiting for feeds to overwrite each file can be a bit of a nightmare.
If you are only using 28.2, the solo has perfect room for picons, I'd keep EPG on an external or USB drive though.

I just disabled the swap and the box froze as soon I went to plugings/feeds, I SSH'd and tried to execute "free" to check the memory but:

root@vusolo:~# free
-sh: can't fork
root@vusolo:~#
I have installed more Picons, TSPanel, and the football plugin. Only thing I had installed when I got the forking issue's were cccam 2.3.0 and pre packaged apps, I actually remove image player, imdb and media scanner
Could it be a faulty box ? :( I didnt get it from WOS as they were out of stock when I wanted one. I got it from ********* who are as reputable. I'm tempted to try Blackhole image but I shouldnt need to, I know VIX should work.

Thanks
Dave

I have a motorised dish. I get 0.8w - 39e , i only got 28e picons, but after I put swap on I got keen and install 13,19,16e ha. SOmething must be causing a memory leak ,, but im a linux n00b, google is my linux skills :-\

TSPanel could be the issue, no real need for it.

Possible, but the issue occured before I installed that,, I could only install that after I enabled swap :-\

Does this mean the enigma2 is hogging memory?

from my own experience, enigma2 does hog memory, mainly due to plugins.
saying that, the solo does work perfectly for me on a default image install.
I've had one running for months without a reboot.
When you add extra EPG sources it can struggle but a reboot/flash usually fixes any issue.

I'm at a loss, all I have installed now is EPG with 1 source and its set to default settings other than that. Also CCcam and some picons. All is working but I cant install any more plug ub unless I enable swap :-\ sounds like some fault. I might redownload the image tomorrow and reflash.

Unlike a lot of other teams who just throw plugins in to the image, most of our included plugins are coded specifically into the image and removing them can it self cause problems, as to memory usage, Linux always uses as much memory as possible as it considers free memory as wasted memory.

try a fresh flash, but dont remove any of the preexisting included plugins, then set up the box one step at a time to see where its going wrong.
